Katharine Quarmby has totted up the sums and established that Unbound owes its authors around £100,000 - if not more. She also documents ways in which it has inflated costs, not fulfilled reader pledges, and not had books in the right place. Shameful and horrific. open.substack.com/pub/katharin...

As my ex-publishers still will not pay me money owed since May 2024, Substack is currently how I earn a living. It's mostly free to read, though, including the pieces at the top of my homepage. On the off chance any Unbound staff see this, you should try contacting the Pensions Ombudsman. Your employer could potentially be prosecuted. Pensions are also protected in the event an employer goes bust, so don't take their word for it that's it's "gone", it's not the 90s anymore

Full disclosure - I know John Mitchinson and previous owners well, (professional friends), a few years ago they paid me to support their authors with marketing ....

So Unbound apparently ended up being a dodgy publishing company. I wonder if Neem Tree Press maintained much autonomy after Unbound bought them last fall or if they ended up with the same problems. Boundless owns both publishing houses now

My gut feeling is that the best way to respond to a hideously ungenerous act - e.g. a publisher who still owes you a five figure sum and who has taken a much bigger sum from your readers and, in its new guise, is refusing to refund it - is not with a spiteful one but a generous one. Hence: this.
