Archbishop McDowell notes how voting on the issue of unification is only viable so long as “someone tells me what it is I am voting for, so long as there is some flesh on the bones”. The importance of rigorous, independent research on policy options is clear.

Asked about “being Irish” Archbishop McDowell discussed growing up Protestant in Belfast - a sense of Irishness was not immediate. For Archbishop Martin it was more natural, connected to the language. For both a connection to nature and the land is significant. @ria.ie @ndirishstudies.bsky.social

We are delighted to be at Benburb Priory this evening for the Religion and Identity in Ireland event with Archbishop Eamon Martin and Archbishop John McDowell in conversation with Professor Deirdre Heenan. @ria.ie @ndirishstudies.bsky.social

'If Sinn Féin advocates for the operation of a liberal immigration regime under unification, in line with its northern support base, it may alienate its southern working-class support base, which is currently sceptical of immigration.' 🗞️ analysis: bit.ly/3X4BQrD @ndirishstudies.bsky.social @ria.ie

Latest ARINS / @irishtimes.com data indicates that only 1/3 of northern Protestants, & pro-union respondents, & only 1/5 of DUP supporters are pro-immigration. In contrast between 3/5 & 2/3 of Catholics, pro-unity respondents, SDLP & northern SF supporters are pro-immigration. 🗞️: bit.ly/3X4BQrD

The latest ARINS / @irishtimes.com survey shows 48 % of northern Catholics would be “very or extremely proud” & 45 % would be “very or extremely delighted” with Irish unity. More than a quarter from a Protestant background in Northern Ireland would “hate it”. www.irishtimes.com/politics/202...

Of the five expected negative emotions among Northern Protestants, “hate” has the strongest association with the likelihood of finding unity “almost impossible to accept”. 🗞️Academic analysis: www.irishtimes.com/politics/202... @ria.ie @ndirishstudies.bsky.social

One in eight Northern Protestants combines expecting intense negative emotional reactions with overt reluctance to regard a unification result as acceptable. This group is 2/3 male, 4/5 working class and more likely to have no educational qualifications. www.irishtimes.com/politics/202...

‘There is growing support among both communities for the proposition , in the wake of the chaos that followed the Brexit referendum, that any constitutional change to the status of Northern Ireland must be preceded by comprehensive planning.’ www.irishtimes.com/opinion/edit...

The latest #ARINS/ @irishtimes.com survey finds planning for a united Ireland is considered important cross-community: ‘Unionist voters in the North… distinguish between a desire for unity and what they see as the advisability of preparing for the possibility’ www.irishtimes.com/politics/202...

Discussing how 'language is knitted into the land' Manchán suggests ‘you need to walk the land to feel the stories and when you do the stories come back into life, they’re not just a quaint story you learnt in school or that we tell tourists… they open up inside you’. @ria.ie

On the living nature of the Irish language Manchán notes it ‘is so much more than something that is translated at cost... or taught badly in schools…’ much of the language ‘has been whittled away... but the words are there, they have never been collected’. @ndirishstudies.bsky.social @ria.ie
