A lesson for the conspiracists, Nature is much better at engineering viruses than humans... @ariskatzourakis.bsky.social @angierasmussen.bsky.social www.cell.com/cell/abstrac...

No. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Massive respect to the team, and the science produced. Dear headline writers - why. www.independent.co.uk/news/science...

One of the major problems we faced with SARS2, EboV, ZIKV, MPox1, etc., is the lack of antivirals. It's a total catch 22. This is because pharma can't guarantee a return investing in diseases that may/may not happen...so, they don't.

A weekend read! Union democracy is key to our future as UCU. Following on from the VP hustings this week, I have set out some key issues. rhiannonforucuvp.wordpress.com/2025/02/08/d...

Ideology will shape the questions scientists ask. It's counterproductive to think otherwise. But the minute it's allowed to shape the answers, we are not doing science anymore.

Standing for UCU NEC (South region) for my third and last time; drop me a vote if you think I should continue!

Uh, can we mirror NCBI?

So did chatgpt lose its job to...an AI?

Oh, I’m sorry, tech bros – did DeepSeek copy your work? I can hardly imagine your distress | Marina Hyde www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

First case of avian flu in human detected- this was clearly bird to human transmission and risk to other humans remains low but good to know this is being surveilled and acted upon. 🧪 thanks @ariskatzourakis.bsky.social for highlighting

This particular myth winds me up, and I know @ariskatzourakis.bsky.social shares my pain...! youtu.be/B_efnqnZ-yI

Wendy Barclay and I are recruiting a postdoc for a project investigating the evolution of swine influenza viruses and how this impacts future pandemic potential. Job is based at Imperial's South Kensington campus. Drop me a DM/email for more details. www.imperial.ac.uk/jobs/search-...

Want to do a PhD on the interactions and evolution between viruses and their hosts? I am one of many signed up supervisors to the ILESLA programme:

If I had a pound for every time an article conflated population immunity with 'the virus becoming milder'... www.bbc.com/future/artic...

Yeah what could possibly go wrong with feeding NHS patient record data into an AI to 'accelerate reaearch'

In early 2020, a pandemic was spreading. The UK’s PM went on a 10 day half-term holiday during which he was uncontactable and the government went into panic mode, focusing, as Hancock related to the COVID enquiry, on buying enough body bags. 1/8

Five years ago (Saturday 11 Jan 2020), first public announcement and availability of a sequence of the new coronavirus. It was posted by @eddieholmes.bsky.social at 01:05 UTC on Virological, and announced on Twitter at 01:08 UTC. ▫️1/ web.archive.org/web/20200118... archive.is/z880d

Please take a look at our latest @independentsage.bsky.social substack...feels somewhat pertinent at present!!! open.substack.com/pub/independ...

I wrote about the risk of another pandemic 🧪🦠 One survey result I mention: most researchers think we're better prepared overall but their single biggest worry is now misinformation and public distrust www.newscientist.com/article/2462...

Job opening for full professor and head of dept in infectious disease epidemiology and dynamics at @lshtm.bsky.social. Deadline 31st Jan: jobs.lshtm.ac.uk/vacancy.aspx...

Some thoughts from me and others about what worries us about future pandemics, and whether we are prepared for them.

Its...~half a decade since covid

Some thoughts from me and others about what worries us about future pandemics, and whether we are prepared for them.

Let's file this under 'ideas that would make scientific publishing worse' www.nature.com/articles/d41...

THREAD: @independentsage.bsky.social by numbers Love us or hate us, we tried something new in public communication of science and sustained it for over three years. From May 2020 - Dec 2023 we livestreamed 139 briefings, published 62 reports, 50 short statements and 7 Q&A and mythbusters. 1/13

🧵Just over a year ago I tuned into the last of the Friday briefings from @independentsage.bsky.social (I thoroughly recommend you watch it), as it reflects on the role of scientists in helping shape the public's understanding of publicly funded science. #medski #academicski #publicpolicy 🧪

Congo outbreak identified: "The mystery has finally been solved. It's a case of severe malaria in the form of a respiratory illness... and weakened by malnutrition." www.reuters.com/world/africa...

Good question - I would say 'no' www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

What did we learn from our experiences with Independent SAGE?
