"For her part, Ms. Petrova is seeing the United States from a new and unsettling vantage point. 'I feel like something is happening generally in America,' she said, in an interview over a video link. 'Something bad is happening. I don’t think everybody understands.'" www.nytimes.com/2025/04/11/s...

i think reasonable people can disagree about the optimal strategy for dems right now, especially in regards to dealing with the coming economic shocks. i don’t think reasonable people can disagree that the strategy followed by dems thus far has been very bad, and not recognizable as strategy at all

yeah, weird that the left wasn’t present at the Fourteen Words conference

faced with a profoundly unjust decision against him, Mahmoud Khalil chooses to show incredible solidarity

Breaking news: The U.S. Department of Energy today announced it is unilaterally cutting in half the overhead rate on its academic grants, something that a federal judge recently told the National Institutes of Health it could not do.

I was blown away by what they did to Mahmoud Khalil and now, a few weeks later, it almost seems quaint. The depths of possibility, the countless forms our destruction can take, have not even been imagined.

Not to mention the obvious (Trump, ICE, and DOGE are a greater threat to America), but this is the whole TikTok ban argument in “rust belt” form. Even though it is plausible, there’s no evidence that this is happening with Chinese cars. Also, US tech can already sell your data internationally

One of the sources of rot running through our political, intellectual, and media institutions is the total triumph of the idea that democracy means outsourcing your morality and point of view to a fuzzily incoherent view of what's popular. Total rejection of the idea of morality as personal virtue.

NEW: Rümeysa Öztürk says she's had 4 painful asthma attacks in ICE custody, and not only is her asthma going untreated but a nurse tore off her hijab, saying, "You need to take that thing off your head." www.aclum.org/sites/defaul...

Every single day Michigan Dems stoop to new lows. If you care about unions, how about you go after this administration’s gutting of the NLRB and FTC? How about actually fighting the fascist, authoritarian order that will destroy the working class?

It’s the same Dems every time and it ALWAYS is both Michigan senators. Just useless people that are unaware/don’t care about the actual implications of their actions

90 percent. They sent innocent people to a gulag so Trump could look like a tough guy. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

This is not even new! This embodies the entire conservative movement on the court, and especially Roberts' tenure. His ACA decision is a similar "ticky-tacky" type of jurisprudence to what we've seen over the past week.

This pathology (incredibly prevalent amongst Michigan Dems) to not critique Trump's economic derangement is so depressing. You know this is terrible for labor! What are we doing here! If you're ahead of the disaster by saying this is bad for labor, you can actually be the real promising alternative!

Georgetown scholar Dr. Khan Suri, who was abducted by ICE, was refused food/water to break Ramadan fast, housed in a room without a bed, and issued *used* underwear. His child cried for days after he was taken and has since stopped speaking. ccrjustice.org/home/press-c...

ah, yes, the ole “keep a habeas petition in your pocket just in case you get disappeared” theory of due process

GOP court decision overturning Democratic victory in North Carolina Supreme Court race is 5 alarm fire for democracy. It’s January 6 without the insurrection. Make no mistake, if GOP succeeds in stealing election in NC, they’ll use that playbook everywhere www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Deeply concerning: US citizen lawyer getting detained and his phone searched on reentering the U.S. at Customs. www.freep.com/story/news/l...

Justice Jackson ends her dissent with a devastating condemnation of the Court's use of the shadow docket and the horror of what's happening here:

NEW: @elfaroenglish.bsky.social identified a SECOND man sent to El Salvador and imprisoned who is married to a US citizen. Jesús Ríos entered the US at a port of entry in 2023 seeking asylum. His wife started the green card process in January. Like most sent to CECOT, he has no criminal record.

White House said it was "fake news." Massive swing up followed by massive swing down. Congrats to whoever pulled off that pump-and-dump. Shame we don't have a functional SEC or legitimate US Attorneys anymore. 🤷‍♂️

I would be making a big deal out of this if I were an elected Democrat

Tonight we learned that it was indeed Andry, the gay man sent to El Salvador because of his “mom” and “dad” tattoos, who an American journalist saw sobbing as guards slapped him repeatedly and shaved his head. He is an innocent. And Trump sent him to a torture prison. Bring them back!

One lesson from the tariffs I’d like to see Dems try to drill home: Despite what many Trump 2024 voters thought, there’s nothing he won’t do because it’s “too crazy.” If he says he wants to wage an unprovoked war of conquest against a NATO ally we should assume he means it.

feels worth flagging that we've now had sustained disparate protest and One Big Day protest at or above the scale of 2017 so it might be time to drop the "public reaction to trump has been more muted in his second term" spiel

Bombshell in North Carolina: the state's GOP-dominated Court of Appeals just sided with the GOP candidate in last year's supreme court race. Their decision would toss roughly 60,000 ballots (!) that have been counted, & likely hand the election to GOP instead of incumbent Dem Justice who won it.

Michigan democrats are weak and spineless. How are these responses functionally different than the GOP?

Unironically I think this is what stewing your brain in modern day twitter results in

We simply had to intentionally destroy the world’s strongest economy while dismantling our scientific and educational infrastructure to ensure that a team with a trans girl would never finish second place in the Mountain West volleyball standings again

FDA planning for fewer food and drug inspections due to layoffs, officials say

Trump announces his tariffs, which are (somehow?) related to the trade barriers other countries are imposing on the U.S. But... THE NUMBERS HE'S PRESENTING BEAR NO RELATION TO REALITY. It would be absurd to call these reciprocal tariffs. They're grievances.

Every so often, it just comes back to me in full force. The political and economic order that allowed this man to come to power is obviously no longer tenable. The leaders who let it happen obviously have to be replaced. This is an epoch defining failure and we have to turn the page completely.

As before, this contains potentially $175 billion for various immigration enforcement-related matters, or an additional $17.5 billion a year for the next decade. The current combined budget of ICE and Border Patrol is $16.8 billion, so that represents a more than 2x increase.

My Ford School colleague Rusty Hills was chair of the Michigan Republican Party. Here, he reminds us that his party used to openly embrace some of the values they are now banning on campus. www.freep.com/story/opinio...

I’m losing my mind. Every day is hell

what booker is doing right now is an example of what i mean when i say things like “we need more ambition right now.” there is room in american politics right now for people with ambition to take big stands and reap the rewards. he’s doing it!

California Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas (D-Salinas): "there are currently more kids with measles in Texas than there are transgender athletes in the NCAA. That's the epidemic we should all be worried about."

a different way to get at this is to ask yourself what *is* a constitution? is it a legal contract or is it a political document? is meaning singularly reducible to text or does meaning emerge from text and context?

I've said plenty about Booker in the past, but I'm in on this. For those people saying "this is performative bullshit" yes welcome to politics. But considering most of our leaders are capitulating, I'll take this kind of performance any day of the week

These statements are what convinced me that material realities don’t change peoples’ opinions. Dems should work towards “abundance”-issues on principle, but it isn’t a political strategy. You have to counter sycophancy with emotion and anger!
