Philly can be a fun town! We were at the Acme surrounded by Eagles jersey bedecked neighbors yesterday and I commented to my partner that it was "peak Philly Christmas" HAPPY Super Bowl Champions EAGLES!!🦅

Is Reddit having another purge? Lemmy.world has been like stepping back into the pre-2010 web for the last year; small communities, raw đź’©memes, and new groups cropping up all the time.

Filing my taxes early felt like such a safe bet this year, but the Treasury folded far faster than I was expecting.

I've worked in software dev briefly, but anyone interested in complex systems should understand tech debt and this is an excellent explanation of that concept and how it appears in all kinds of systems, and our laws. www.theindex.media/americas-con...

I spent the morning discussing how Daria Morgendorffer represents the Gen X ideal of a Millennial, rather than what we were or became over time, with ChatGPT. Not sure it was productive, but it was fun.

@tkingfisher.com's Swordheart ebook is on sale at $2.99. It's part of the Hugo-nominated "World of the White Rat" series. Fancy hardcover edition will be released next month if you prefer collectibles. She's a "buy it all" author for us. www.barnesandnoble.com/w/swordheart...

As a (former) librarian, many people ask me what I do with books they no longer need. I take mine to the local Better World Books dropoff. I originally met them at a library conference years ago and was struck by their great service and I've been happy to use them since.

My psych doc today: 'In residency, we called Paxil the Devil's SSRI—too many interactions, hard to get off of.' So, now I'm back on the Anxiety Med Carousel™️. 🎠I also get to call the pharmacy and explain that: No, I won't be taking all these at the same time. 🎡

I threw on Les Misérables (10th Anniversary Dream Cast) this morning for no reason at all. Just a story about injustice, abusive cops, wealth gaps, and a revolution in the streets. Totally irrelevant. Yep. No parallels here.

I will die on the We Should Be On Our Fifth Installment Of Pacific Rim By Now hill.

Direct hit on the Sunset Fire in Hollywood. 🎯 Nice work, @lafd.bsky.social #LAFD c/o @nbcla.bsky.social 👨🏼‍🚒

Repost a fox that channels your #January vibe. Thanks @foxes.hourly.media

Working my way through 'You're Not Listening' by Kate Murphy—it’s a mix of tough love and awesome advice. Takes a deep dive into improving your listening skills, starting with the fact that most of us could do better. Perfect addition to your reading list if you’re keen to hone this critical skill.

I find nothing so pleasant on a snowy winter evening as some time at my spinning wheel while taking in a D&D actual-play. Tonight it's merino silk blend on my #kiwi3 and @dropouttv.bsky.social @dimension20.bsky.social catching up on Junior Year. #Handspinning #spinningwheel #TTRPG #actualplays

I'm recognizing January 6th by quietly denying the legitimacy of Trump's reelection, based on myriad reasons including but not limited to Russian interference and Elon Musk's greasy thumb on the scales, in the privacy of my own home.

No one has a useful definition of AGI, so let me at least propose an exclusion: An AI system very obviously cannot be AGI if it does not know the difference between telling the truth and telling a lie.

"I'd like to order 200 2.5M, 6mm steel screws" McMaster-Carr: "Check your pockets. They're already there."

Low-trust and opting out of society basically.

Cassiel's Servant is so -good-. If you are the sort of person who read and enjoyed the Kushiel's Trilogy by @jacquelinecarey.bsky.social , this is the perfect companion book. The novel I didn't know I needed, 2024. app.thestorygraph.com/books/07bd50...

Just finished Click Here to Kill Everybody. Enjoy my review on StoryGraph. app.thestorygraph.com/reviews/e34e...

In my upcoming book, I show that, beginning in the 1980s, framing homelessness as a problem of mental illness and addiction was politically engineered to obscure the socioeconomic roots of the crisis and to justify the removal of homeless people from public space. bsky.app/profile/bria...

People: What productivity software do you use? Me:

One of the most helpful things I’ve ever read is “Who Goes Nazi?” By Dorothy Thompson. I mean look I think dialectical materialism is the best way to understand history but individuals are mostly fascist or not fascist based on their weird little hearts. harpers.org/archive/1941...

It IS kinda f---ed that the whole country costs less than they're spending (total) on that next "CAPTAIN AMERICA" movie

That all the most normal people you know are like “well of course a health insurance ceo was murdered on the street” speaks at least a little to a widespread, if subsurface radicalism borne of how shit everything has become, I think.

I love and respect all holiday traditions; except Elf on the Shelf. That thing is beyond freaky and I refuse to participate.

watch Hundreds of Beavers and you’ll believe in art again. it’s a deeply humanist film… even if most of the actors are people in mascot suits www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/sole...

The brilliant Hundreds of Beavers is free on YouTube right now. It's part live-action cartoon, part almost-silent film, and yet totally modern and completely innovative. Enjoy it this weekend (without the kids). Thanks to @bobchipman.bsky.social for recommending it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=guE0...

Dunno if this is of use to anyone, but I’m slowly adding to a list of small-to-med indie news and media orgs so I can just have a centralized News Posts feed bsky.app/profile/did:...

Holy fuck, Whole Foods union just dropped. 300 grocery store workers for Whole Foods in Philly are unionizing with UFCW local 1776. As far as I can tell, this is the first organizing effort at a whole foods *store,* ever.

I'm enjoying Click Here to Kill Everybody, which was suggested to me by a cybersec expert I was working with last year. I'm struck by how basically all of the critical issues addressed in the book have gotten worse, not better in the years since 2018. app.thestorygraph.com/books/e5c5dc...

Trump Locks Bathroom Door So Elon Musk Can’t Follow Him In theonion.com/trump-locks-...

One reason vaccine hesitancy is so high in the U.S. is the fact that millions of people do not have a primary care physician. Studies have found that primary care doctors are hugely influential in people’s medical decisions. We’re more likely trust them. If we only had national healthcare…

Do better, Hollywood. https://buff.ly/3O8DfIT

My last weeks have been shamelessly bingeing #WorldsWithoutNumber worldsbeyondnumber.com It's my dream team of D&D actual-plays and includes the music, sound and editing wizardry of @taylordotbiz.bsky.social who I fell in love with during #FunCity many years ago for playing "all the bad boys."

I'm hoping to try a reading challenge in 2025 so I've signed up to StoryGraph. Let me know if you're interested in connecting there as well. app.thestorygraph.com/profile/a_ro...

Enjoying representing Rajant Health the Pittsburgh Biotechnology Summit at Carnegie Science Center What an amazing view!

"One more thing. You said you were playing D&D. Now, Mrs. Columbo, she's a forever DM. And one thing that happens is there's dice everywhere, all numbers of sides. Those 4-sided ones I always step on. And I just, I've only seen d6s. Whole house, not a single d20 or d12. Now that's interesting."
