The US is currently gutting the best research system the world has ever seen If Australia had built a world class university system rather than turning our institutions into degree mills cashing in on the intentional student market, we’d be in an excellent position to attract a lot of talent

"The happy compromise" on healthcare in Australia. An oldie but a goodie from Ron Tandberg that's still relevant to #auspol, today.

A brief history of ambulance 'ramping' at hospital emergency departments - doi.org/10.1111/imj.... #auspol

David Snowden of the Cynefin Framework ... "once you really start to understand complexity, you don’t say everything is complex - a lot of people are trying to do that - you say: human beings have learned to create order and that’s valuable” www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wao... @18:30

I've long found @mirandawolpert.bsky.social's FUPS concept to be a helpful way to explain the limitations of health services data ... bmcmedicine.biomedcentral.com/articles/10....

Important reporting in @thesaturdaypaper.com.au on hospital and NDIS funding, and some of the dynamics that sit behind trying to improve the system. 💯🎯 @squigglyrick.bsky.social nails it. 👉👉 www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au/news/politic...

'Innovations' aren't always terribly innovative.

"If you save money in the NDIS budget but the budget of Medicare [& states] goes up, are you actually saving money? .. As all things in Australian politics tend to do - How much is the budget for this one siloed thing?" @squigglyrick.bsky.social 🎯 open.spotify.com/episode/4i7n... #auspol #auspol2025

Was glad to contribute some thoughts to this article by Paige Cockburn on hospital waiting times and the unintegration of AUS health and social care ... www.abc.net.au/news/2025-01... #bedblock #healthsystems #integratedcare

Elisabeth Rosenthal of @kffhealthnews.bsky.social in @theatlantic.com on hospitals' pursuit of consumer & staff experience at the expense of population access & outcomes. Quadruple Aim thinking is yet another thing Aussies shouldn't import from the US. www.theatlantic.com/health/archi... #auspol

Design of economic evaluations along the development process - Thanks to @rich-norman.bsky.social who invited me to give this talk to the Australian Clinical Trials Alliance on #healtheconomics #FormativeEvaluation #earlyHTA #EarlyDialogue #LearningHealthSystems www.youtube.com/watch?v=oh-I...

Love when a health economist (@mattxsutton.bsky.social) uses a qualitative causal model (Directed Acyclic Graph) to critique econometric analyses and think through what parameters and data is needed for a robust model #HESGBristol #EconSky #HealthEconomics @hope-uom.bsky.social

Health Technology Management: Using routinely collected activity data and structured elicitation to iteratively plan, model, and implement services. Culture is king, and yet not something we routinely measure or include in evaluation. "Willingness to pursue dialysis at home relied on patients’ and carers’ ability to place their confidence in their kidney care teams rather than how services were organised." bmjopen.bmj.com/content/14/1...

Our recent Artificial Intelligence in Medicine publication looked at how the data mining of process-aware information systems (i.e., #processmining) can be used to inform healthcare decision-analyses, where economic outcomes are important. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... #AI #healtheconomics

Sometimes the combination of arrogance and ignorance is breathtaking. Yes, US health care has high admin costs; that's because it relies so much on private insurers. Govt-run health insurance has much lower overhead

One thing that econ critiques don't understand is there is no insult from them that economists haven't already heard from another economist in their professional career.

A recent paper on our work with Local #Hospital Networks to help develop service interventions. Despite difficulties in estimating opportunity costs & with the relevance of #PBMA & #HTA -type processes, economic evaluation 📈📉 can add value to local decision-making. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

This is worth a read.... www.bmj.com/content/387/...

From our systematic review in @bmj.com, we developed a rich picture of the strategies and tactics for reducing the emissions produced by healthcare systems. #healthsystemsustainability #healthpolicy #healthcareimprovement

".. before we spend $2 million putting the spotlight on [Primary Health Networks, PHNs] as a problem, do we need to be honest with ourselves as to what they really are there for and how we really mean to run them?" www.healthservicesdaily.com.au/phn-review-a...

Am looking forward to seeing folks at the Health Economists’ Study Group (HESG) Winter 2025 Meeting ❄️. Hosted by the University of Bristol 📍, 8th to 10th January 2025 📆. #healtheconomics #HESG

Without home hospital, our volumes of admitted patients would have been even worse. Many patients also seem to prefer it. Two great articles from npj Digital Med and the Wapo. www.nature.com/articles/s41... www.washingtonpost.com/health/2024/... HT: @erictopol.bsky.social

What IS health economics and outcomes research? Check out this explainer by #ISPOR www.ispor.org/heor-explained

Once again diving into #VBHC for a project and once again struck by the disappointing quality of the literature. So much talk about 'value' in healthcare, yet much of it reflects only a surface-level or pseudo-understanding of the concept. We can do better. qualitysafety.bmj.com/content/24/7...

Me rereading my own code from 2 months ago:

Au cours des prochains jours, nous avons les 46es Journées des Économistes de la Santé Français #JESF46 à l'EHESP à Rennes. Hâte de rencontrer de nouveaux collègues et de découvrir une session entièrement dédiée à Hospinnomics dès le premier jour ! Ici le programme 👉 www.ces-asso.org/activite/46e...

Ambulance ramping out front of hospitals is a big & continuing problem around Australia. @hesrjdk.bsky.social & I were recently asked by @aunz.theconversation.com to discuss what causes it, & some possible solutions. theconversation.com/ambulance-ra... @flindersuniversity.bsky.social #auspol

Social media isn't good for children but bans won't tackle the root causes of digital harms. I'm grateful to the @bmj.com for inviting me to share some thoughts on this issue. www.bmj.com/content/387/... #DigitalDeterminantsOfHealth #DDoH

Australia is planning to ban children under 16 from using social media. As children spend more time in front of screens the negative effects on their health are becoming harder to ignore, but a ban will not automatically protect them, says @louiseholly.bsky.social www.bmj.com/content/387/...

While they're all the rage, Adrian Barnett always has me thinking twice about the usefulness of prediction models ... "Evidence of questionable research practices in clinical prediction models" bmcmedicine.biomedcentral.com/articles/10....

I hear an early #auspol election is in the offing - Here are some thoughts of mine from when I spoke with ABC News. Don't be fooled by a quick-fix cash splash or political rort. Instead, genuine cooperation and integrated healthcare planning is needed. www.abc.net.au/news/2024-08... #healthpolicy

A new methods paper of ours is now published in the HTAi journal, IJTAHC - We show how economic evaluation methods, including expert elicitation, can be used to develop and improve services. We shouldn't just focus on drug and device reimbursement! doi.org/10.1017/S026...
