He sounds like a red state legislature handing directives to faculty at public universities, except it comes in the form of a "workload chart"

"By reckoning with the violent, dehumanizing history of Black and Indigenous schooling, Eve L. Ewing finds in the resistance of students & renegade teachers a path toward a life-affirming education." -- Robin D. G. Kelley Thanks to generous donors, 500+ copies are in mail to K-12 teachers.

"Checkmate" derives ultimately from a Persian term 'Shāh Māt', which means "the king is stumped/helpless" probably as an Arabic corruption of the Persian word for "died/defeated", 'mata'. So it's supposed to be "your king is defeated" but actually means closer to "your king is confused".

those that evangelize genAI as a "powerful tool" for their little tasks without consideration of its disastrous impact on the information/knowledge ecology are shortsighted, to say the least

If people were really just dying from chronic diseases then how come they weren’t dying from their chronic diseases until after March, 2020?

I can't tell you how much I hate this.

*sees picture of a fascist in a too-small suit that pulls at the shoulders and shows their calf when they sit* "oh, but they're so dapper"

I think there's a much bigger conversation to be had about the business model of R1 universities. If you're at a public uni, your Department's state funding may be contingent on meeting PhD admissions quotas that 'justify' the continued existence of its grad programs.

On the cutting room floor is the bit where the host introduced their interview series, The Interview, and I asked how long it took to come up with the name. Anyway, here’s me talking about birds and science and burnout and moving through the world. The photo’s nice! www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/m...

The entire business model of American R1 universities is not viable without restoration of federal funding, & every individual institution pretending it can solve this problem alone is also not viable. University presidents need to be speaking out, collectively & loudly about this, in DC, right now.

Now, I want to integrate this into HPM 756... 🧐

Loooooove the shoutout to the Freedom House Ambulance Service on #ThePitt Here's a doc you can watch to learn more: www.wqed.org/freedomhouse/ #BlackHistoryMonth #MedHist

Say you’ve got very good causal IDENTIFICATION. Can you say you have causality, can make a causal general claim, and can say what “THE causal effect” is? NO We explain why in new article at Journal of Causal Inference. www.degruyter.com/document/doi...

Rescind TEN of the seventeen acceptances?? Pretty disheartening stuff. Especially when the time used for evaluating/planning with students could’ve been used elsewhere. Hard times for scientific training clearly only getting harder.

I assigned GIS labs where learners apply the spatial methods I taught about in lectures, and I think I may have underestimated their difficulty to newcomers.

I'm begging people to remember that 'meritocracy' was coined for a work of satirical fiction. It is not a real thing, and, as the satire suggested, defining 'merit' as a standalone measurable individual quality is impossible.

Underscores FTW

We really went from, “We can’t possibly defund the police,” to “let’s defund everything else.” Smh

This new season of #LoveIsBlind is a snoozefest (how did they manage to cast so many people who look the same?), and "blindness" as metaphor was especially grating because one of the cast members instrumentalizes his blind sister (I suspect it was part of his narrative in the tryouts)

Before you put up some cool AI image, ask yourself--would you go a day without electricity in your home to get that image? Would you dump a bucket of toxic sludge in a nearby waterway to get that image? Because it may seem quick, simple and easy, but somewhere, a price is being paid.

Toddler T is now emphatically counting from 1-10, and throwing play-doh as he counts

The ACA mandated private insurance plans to cover vaccination costs. A new study finds that post-ACA HPV vaccine uptake rose by 43%. Among the contributing factors: - Fewer people uninsured - More people going to the doctor www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

"Still, the firings have bewildered federal employees like Powell. If their mission is to reduce government waste, she said, it doesn’t make sense to get rid of auditors like her tasked with detecting fraud." www.nola.com/news/louisia...

Me, circa 2014: "If 2014 has taught me any lessons, it's that people think/talk far less about me than I think, and that their approval is not the same as permission- neither of which I need."

#Polio vaccination in #Gaza has started. WHO teams are on the ground providing support to ensure a quality campaign.
