I love when real langauge is so obviously less designed than fictional ones. In Japanes 空車 (kuushya) is made from the characters for "sky" and "car". Naturally sky-car means "available taxi" not airplane.

On Feb. 14th I try always to give honor to one of the greatest contributors to American democracy in our nation’s history, Frederick Douglass. Born into slavery, Douglass never knew his actual birthdate, and adopted Feb. 14th as the day. His penetrating insights about our country inspire me daily.

Finally got around to watching Baccano! after over a decade. Fantastic show and only 13 episodes! Apparently based on a light novel series. Maybe I should try to pick through those in Japanese to motivate myself to learn more.

One thing to enjoy about learning Japanese vocabulary is that some pronunciations make even less sense than English unfair words. Take these two similar words for "skilled". 上手 is "jyouzu" because that combines common reading for each kanji 上手い is "umai" because it predates the use of kanji
