For #Invertefest here is my completed pollinator garden work which I made for my show about the future of pollination for Manufactured Ecosystems. Using collaged linocut prints I built up this little garden with multiple native wildflowers, bees, moths, butterflies, beetles and a log, 🧵

Trans and biological aren't opposites. Why does everyone keep talking as if they are Trans people are biological people THINK FOR EVEN ONE SECOND

Tonight (and for the next 2-3 weeks) hundreds of millions of birds are going to be streaming overhead in the eastern half of North America. They evolved to rely on star/moon light, our overnight lights can disorient them and lead to their deaths. Get your overnight lights out, eastern US!

Well, my main thought is that it is too mid to be destroying labor and the earth for.

Loving the lowkey shade being thrown by this sign at the La Brea Tar pits.

I mean this in an encouraging way: try to unlearn your disgust of “creepy” crawlies. While not always easy, it is so richly rewarding to develop an appreciation for some of the most numerous and fascinating animals that you can see just about every time you go outside. There is wonder everywhere.

Me: find me the NEXRAD radar map, please! DuckDuckGo: (helpfully) oui oui madame, voila! Chemin du Radar!

👋 Sorry, but they’re still extinct. #NHMLAC experts weigh in on why dire wolves have not, in fact, been successfully cloned, and the surprising perils of de-extinction: bit.ly/SryDrWlvs

Daddyo’s penne arrabbiata. Small pasta shop on the edge of UofT’s downtown campus. Had a big boisterous man who we called Daddyo, but was actually owned by the quiet chef/cook. The arrabbiata used Thai chilis and got me through undergrad and most of my PhD. I was so sad when they closed.

"Ontario to spend $750M on STEM programs at universities, colleges" Shocking, but welcome! Too bad there doesn't seem to be any support for the social sciences and humanities, which are just as important as STEM. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Happy platypus

A graduate student who worked on a project with me created a sea turtle mug with clever details, including the carapace, plastron, flipper, and marginal scutes. I am delighted to start drinking my tea from such a thoughtful and original gift.

Watching animals eat is like my biology crack. I don’t need it, I don’t have to do it, I don’t even always like it, but there’s just something about critters noshing on one another that leaves me gobsmacked. And nothing does it like the comb jelly Beroe [Thread 🧵] 📽️ www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xkN...

Just got the first photos for the new bread bags, and they already look so good! We're doing one last revision to make the strap adjustable for better fitting/carrying. If you need a high quality linen bag to carry around your €1 baguettes and bread this summer, I got you covered

Cats are notorious for hiding their pain, but luckily a lot of work has gone into deciphering their signals. For acute pain, researchers have developed the Feline Grimace Scale, a tool that looks at five different facial features. Read more here: ashinonyx.quarto.pub/my-website/n... 🧪

Saying trans people threaten the concept of sexual orientation is like saying mashed potatoes threaten the concept of dinner

#ScienceSky my oral qualifying exam is coming up, and I'm not a great public speaker. I've got a little over a month to change that. Would anyone be willing to listen to me practice my oral exam and give feedback? I don't have anyone outside of my committee, really, and I need the practice.

Tiny bees that nest in old empty snail shells? Okay, come on. That's got to be something out of Beatrix Potter or Thumbelina, right? Nope! They are oh so very real, resourceful, and adorable. Nature never ceases to astonish. 📷 Müller et al jhr.pensoft.net/article/27704/

I am excited to share that my first first-author paper, “A General Method for Detection and Segmentation of Terrestrial Arthropods in Images,” is now available on preprint. If you are interested take a look at my blog (asgersvenning.com/flat-bug/) or consider reading the pre-print (linked below).

It took the university 3 months to actually pay me after my postdoc started, but only 3 days to lock me out of my account after the postdoc ended. Priorities!

I used to be a huge Harry Potter fan. I bought a ton of merch. I listened to podcasts. Rereading the books brought me comfort. Now, the franchise makes me feel sick. I haven’t bought anything HP related in years. Trust me, if I can do it, you can too.

This description of a modern lumber mill did not match with what I expected. Not surprising that I'm wrong - I have no professional experience with lumber or forestry But how many people have an outdated picture of what resource extraction and manufacturing are like?

Fellow Canadians, have you planned when you will vote? You can get all the info you need here: www.elections.ca/home.aspx

one of my recurring favorite assignments for my genetics class is that they have to pretend they're Star Trek science officers and describe a bunch of alien genetic samples, explaining why that variation makes sense in the conditions of an alien planet. the answers are SO GOOD.

There will be an all-party animal protection election debate on the 23rd, organized by the BC SPCA and other animal welfare groups. All parties were invited to participate (I notice a certain party missing from the roster atm) www.animalelectiondebate.ca
