Huge swathes of Scotland's west coast are blighted by this plant, killing all sorts of wildlife. It should be illegal even to grown in one's garden.

Let's play 'spot the fern'! A 🧵 Wilson's Filmy-fern is a tiny species, with fronds just one cell thick! Characteristic of Scotland's temperate rainforest, it usually grows in lush bryophyte carpets. At Bracklinn Falls nr Callander, it hadn't been seen since 1999. Can you find it on the photo?

Tonight, the Snow Moon rises. 🌕❄️ Named for February’s deep snows, this full moon was also called the Storm Moon or Ice Moon in Old English, reflecting winter’s cold grip. Look below its glow tonight, and you may spot Regulus...one of the brightest stars in the sky. Moonrise: 17:06*

Would you like to get involved in the work to help save #ScotlandsRainforest? Our Rainforest Futures is looking to identify the barriers, opportunities and next steps to help address the issues around affordable accommodation in the west of Scotland.

I’m assisting Trees for Life with the Wild Pine Project to locate unrecorded remnants of Scotland’s Caledonian Pine Forests. In Gleann Fionnlighe nr Fort William we cored several old trees. My analysis shows the oldest originate in early 1600s so very probably wild, not planted. #ThickTrunkTuesday

🦡 Anyone who has ever tip-toed across a deer or cattle grid will admire the nonchalance of this badger caught on trailcam at #LochArkaig Pine Forest 🔊 (sound up) Skills! 👏

"Identifying and protecting Ireland's rainforest fragments would strengthen another weapon against climate breakdown, says Eoghan Daltun, a rewilding farmer in west Cork’s Beara Peninsula, and author of 'The Magic of an Irish Rainforest'." In today's Guardian. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Did you know that #Scotlandsrainforest is home to many liverworts, simple plants that are similar to moss? This is spotty featherwort, or Plagiochila punctata. You'll see it growing on trees and rocks in very damp places, and it often forms a sort of humped shape. 📷 Gordon Rothero

Meet the team assembled to equip local people up and down the West coast with the skills needed to earn a living saving Scotland's rainforest. #OurRainforestFutures has been made possible thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. 🧵 1/6

Lichens aren't plants, but what are they? April Windle explains in this fascinating podcast from 2022. https://buff.ly/3K14Ua9 #ScotlandsRainforest

Winter is a great time to look for some of the specialist plants found in #ScotlandsRainforest, like Wilson's filmy fern. Easily confused with a liverwort, Wilson's filmy fern is named after the 19th century botanist William Wilson, who discovered 60 new species of moss! 📷 John MacPherson

Discover #ScotlandsRainforest in Glen Nevis through outdoor play, games, and hands-on exploration! 10.30, Sunday 16 February with @johnmuirtrust.bsky.social Find out more: mountainfestival.co.uk/ticket/explo...

The incredible woodlands of #ScotlandsRainforest are facing many threats. The biggest problems are over-grazing by deer, and the spread of a non-native invasive plant called Rhododendron ponticum, but they're also threatened by pollution, climate change and exotic pests and diseases. 📷 Caz Austen

Did you know that moss doesn't flower? Those flower-looking structures are actually capsules that produce spores. Not all mosses produce capsules, but many are incredibly beautiful, like those of this greater pincushion moss. 📷 Gordon Rothero

Ireland's temperate rainforest faces similar threats to #ScotlandsRainforest. Good to see so many people working to protect these habitats @irishrainforest.bsky.social www.irishnews.com/life/stunnin...
