Check it out! Assigned Media's own @valorievandieman.bsky.social with a Slate byline today.

Axios 21 Jun 25 -- GLAAD reports # of films with LGBTQ+ characters declining. pbly due to anti-DEI efforts. 2024: 23.6% 59 of 250 2023: 27.3% 70 of 256 2022: 28.5% 100 of 350 Fewer family/animated films w/ LGBTQ+ characters. And screen minutes per LGBTQ+ character also down.

Vox con't -- The issue in Skrmetti was simply a threshold question of whether Tenn's ban should get heightened judicial scrutiny bec. it discriminated because of kids' sex; Roberts went well beyond this to rule entirely unnecessarily rule on the legality of such bans. @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

Vox 20 Jun 25 -- Another good plain language analysis of Skrmetti. "Roberts might as well have argued that Jim Crow laws do not discriminate on the basis of race, but instead discriminate based on the color of a person’s skin." @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

Advocate 20 Jun 25 - After joining BlueSky in an unsuccessful attempt at high-profile lib-trolling, VP Vance has become the most blocked account on B/S with ~120k blocks while gaining only ~10k followers. @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

TheHill con't -- 10 challenges to state bans on care cite 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause at issue in Skrmetti. But over a dozen others cite its Due Process Clause, federal disability law and/or a state’s own constitution. @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

TheHill con't -- 27 Rep states since 2021 have banned transition care and laws in Arizona & New Hampshire — the 1st Northeastern state to pass restrictions— only prohibit minors from accessing surgeries which was not part of Skrmetti (and is v rare).

TheHill 20 Jun 25 -- Interesting quote: “The immediate outcome is Skrmetti doesn’t change anything...It doesn’t affect the availability or legality of care in states that do not have bans and it says that states that have bans can do so if they survive other challenges.” @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

Note to self: If Fox News immediately picks up your interview and broadcasts it as supporting their audience's anti-trans prejudices it's prbly a good sign you've just thrown your community under the bus. @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

ErinReed 22 Jun 25 -- Good analysis/take-down of McBride's recent NYT podcast in which she suggests trans ppl have “overplayed their hand” & calls for more "following the polls" -- thus providing crucial political cover other Dems to move right on trans issues. @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

Independent 20 Jun 25 -- A last minute Rep change in pending tax bill bans fed Medicaid funds for minors AND adults. Senate Dems will likely have a chance to kill the provision but even liberal Sen Dems like Eliz. Warren, Chris Murphy & Patty Murray staying noncommittal. @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

Advocate 20 Jun 25 -- 9 members of Gender Liberation Movement (GLM) arrested for protesting Skrmetti ruling by blockading the Supreme Court courthouse and unfurling trans flag. @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

Missouri is really maximizing the hate by trying to ban gender affirming care for children in the same bill as also repealing abortion rights. TWIBS brought to you by @alyssaur.bsky.social

Law Dork also notes "Justice Thomas repeatedly quoted from and cited the NYTImes [from] its ongoing project to question gender-affirming medical care for trans minors in a way it has not done for other medical decisions with much higher regret rates or for any other non-presidential topic."

Fascinating analysis by LawDork of how Skrmetti was the creation of long-term investment by Christian nationalist Right to reignite the stalled anti-gay culture war and in the process "shave off the edges of the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause..." @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

NYT 19 Jun 25 -- More from NYTimes "flood the zone" coverage of trans: "The Supreme Court Fails to See Transgender Teens" (by queer writer M Gessen) "What Has Medical Research Found on Gender Treatments for Trans Youth?" (on the "uncertainty" around care that is both safe & effective)

This video tells the story of Kenneth Zucker, a researcher who had parents deprive children of toys associated with the other sex and even forbid them opposite sex friends, with a soothing background of Minecraft parkour. Click through and help the channel grow! www.youtube.com/shorts/dLT-S...

NYT con't -- More flood the zone: "Court Leaves States to Decide on Trans Treatments for Minors"

NYT 19 Jun 25 -- NYTimes following it's patented "flood the zone" coverage pattern publishes more articles on Skrmetti also apparently blaming the trans rights movement for unsuccessfully ntrying to secure their legal rights. @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

NYT 18 Jun 25 -- NYTimes runs guest opinion: My Daughter Was at the Center of the Supreme Court Case on Trans Care. Our Hearts Are Broken ("There is something incredibly surreal about finding your family at the center of a landmark Supreme Court decision...") @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

NYT 19 Jun 25 -- NYTimes once again invents a story about trans people & then covers it as news: "How the Transgender Rights Movement Bet on the Supreme Court and Lost" There are 3m trans ppl in US & none bet on five white evangelical jurists to protect our rights. @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

This predatory organization is misleading parents of trans kids. Also: Minecraft parkour! 😜 www.youtube.com/shorts/gfT54...

It's easy to forget now but we had decades of steady advancement on trans rights. The 2016 bathroom bills invited huge backlash! It was only after the media constructed sports and youth medications as 'debates' that opposition moved from the far right to the polite center.

“For transgender Americans, this is a dark day in an increasingly dark year that has been marked by … However, the implications of this decision in an environment where science and expertise is increasingly contested and politicized may go further than almost anyone appreciates.”

In a time when it is okay to be selfish and inward-looking in coverage, @evanurquhart.bsky.social takes care to explain why Skremetti affects, well, anyone with a body.

ScotusBlog 18 Jun 25 -- Good long-form legal analysis by ScotusBlog of the majority opinion and the concurring & dissenting opinions regarding the arguments at issue in Skirmetti. @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

The decision in Skrmetti lets politicians create their own evidence to justify banning necessary healthcare. It's bad, writes @evanurquhart.bsky.social. Not just for trans people, but for anyone whose healthcare is or could potentially be politically contested. Read more here:

Hey folks. We've got a story on Skrmetti coming, and more analysis to come in the days ahead. It would be such a boost if you'd consider becoming a member of Assigned Media, today of all days. www.assignedmedia.org/newsletter

Not all the news is bad, Maine continues to stand up in defense of trans kids.

Not all the news is bad, Maine continues to stand up in defense of trans kids.

ScotusBlog 18 Jun 25 --- Supreme Court read around the heightened scrutiny requirement for classing grouups "bec. of sex" finding that Skirmetti classifies based on age & use of medicine not sex--even though main diff from cis kids provided same care IS their sex. @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

A/P 18 Jun 25 -- Surprising no one, in US v Skrmetti Supreme Court reads around the plain black letter meaning the equal protection clause which requires the government to treat similarly situated people the same way claiming (falsely) that there is "fierce scientific debate" about affirming care.

ErinReed 17 Jun 25 -- As happened with trans prisoners denied care, a fed judge grants class certification for _all_ trans people seeking passports w/ correct gender (or "X" designation) not just the named plaintiffs in the current pending lawsuit on this matter. @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

Advocate 17 Jun 25 -- Fed appeals court finds 11-year-old Wisconsin 5th grade trans girl has the right to use her middle school's girls’ bathroom, which she previously had used w/o incident since 1st grade. (This is where we're at: litigating where 11 y/o's urinate.) @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

Advocate 17 Jun 25 -- Fed appeals court rules that Christian-owned Olympus Spa in Washington state cannot discriminate against trans people and admit "biological women only." @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

AP 17 Jun 25 -- Reagan-appointed fed judge finds Trumps canceling of hundreds of research grants focused on gender or DEI it illegal (“arbitrary and capricious” ) saying it was “palpably clear” that the goal was “racial discrimination and discrimination against LGBTQ community."

A gunman who preached transphobia. A victim who fought for gender affirming care.

FTC 12 Jun 25 -- FTC holding “The Dangers of ‘Gender-Affirming Care’ for Minors” online workshop w/ doctors, ethicists, whistleblowers, detransitioners & their parents "grounded in research, expertise, & personal experience" around GAC as a deceptive trade practice. @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

This is journalism malpractice 101, and it should be taught in J-schools as such. What in bloody hell does "widely accepted mean"? It's not "widely accepted". It's true. The other alternative is false. Full stop.

Advocate 10 Jun 25 - Iowa passes a complete ban on Medicaid funds being used for affirming medical care, for adolescents _and_ for adult, sparing only related mental health services. @rikiwilchins.bsky.social

almost every article, series, or podcast about trans people/trans care in the nyt centers the voices of cis people when trans people get to speak, they are taken out of context, misrepresented, or called biased activists it's like if you wrote an article about abortion and primarily spoke to men
