🔴The Myth of the 'De-Extinction' of the Dire Wolf Don't be fooled by reports of extinct animals being brought back to life, argues genetic researcher Jonathan Roberts. The truth is much scarier www.bylinesupplement.com/p/the-myth-o...

This is the best thing I’ve read about dire wolves… We all know they haven’t/cannot come back, but what is the bigger risk with this kind of narrative? How do genetic resurrection myths compromise the urgency to care about the natural world we have now?

“I feel quite nervous because I am not well read, but I feel that I don’t have to be well read” She’s taken the entire white-privilege biscuit tin with that one! Impressed that @sathnam.bsky.social didn’t immediately slide both his books right at her across the table!

Admiring the tenacity and determination of this daffodil bulb that flowered while in a paper bag of forgotten bulbs at the bottom of my potting bench… …growing without roots!

There is no autism epidemic because being neurodivergent is not a disease. Understanding neurodiversity requires accepting that different natures require different nurture. Empathy and curiosity, not elimination, is needed.

Words To Live By Number 213

'Dandelions,' was painted by the Danish artist Bertha Wegmann around 1910. It wasn't an arbitrary choice of a plant to paint: the dandelion was used to promote the women’s liberation movement in Scandinavia because of its capacity for uncontrolled, strong-willed growth.

Laughs in parent…

Behold, back from extinction...the dire wolf!

Only a *little* while since the end of the project, I'm delighted that the Board of Longitude book is available for order (publication date 17 April), and that it is a relatively modest £32 in paperback! #histsci www.cambridge.org/gb/universit...

A great piece (as ever) from Mark Carnall about the ridiculous claims coming out about #DireWolves, and how whatever these tweaked dogs really are, they have nothing to do with reversing #extinction or evolutionary biology. #deextinction fistfulofcinctans.wordpress.com/2025/04/08/b...

2008: graduate into a massive recession as stock markets tumble… … austerity, Brexit, war, plague… 2025: random pensioner, as they nick a pack of reduced sausages out of my shopping basket, “your generation don’t know how good you’ve got it…” I cannot even.

Being born, or identifying as, female in Afghanistan should be enough to ensure you are able to seek asylum in any country. End of.

This is horrific. The home office has decided that a female Afghan rights defender seeking asylum in the UK faces "no risk from the Taliban" and denied her claim. She will be killed — or, frankly, worse — if she is returned to Afghanistan. This cannot stand. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

I am one of the authors whom Meta stole (sorry, ‘scraped’) from, by using their books to train Libgen. So I’m biased. But this from @mscaitlinmoran.bsky.social is👌

It's not hair-splitting to correct this common phrase. AI won't take @jburnmurdoch.ft.com's job, or yours. But bosses may use AI (even if it is much, much worse than a human) as they make cuts (many of which they will later regret) www.ft.com/content/471b...

Some figures in this SEND investigation are mind-boggling: - Private companies charging councils £350k a year to provide for one child - Total local government spend on private SEND provision has risen 300% in 8 yrs - Children taking 4hr taxi journeys to receive care A system totally broken

Mind-blowing to me that today parents, who work full time, have to also do all of this on top of their paid jobs! Having kids in late-stage capitalism is wild!
