being obsessed with IQ is a good sign that you have nothing in your life to give you actual meaning. (also a good sign you have bell curve-esque beliefs about human equality)

One danger of embracing generative AI as a learning device and in language assistance is that you're letting the keepers of that AI have power over what you learn and how you write. It will be programmed with biases, unintentional but often *quite* intentional, that you will unknowingly adopt.

Want great summer plans? Look no further! The PSInet workshop is coming to Indiana University, to re-introduce the ecophys community to PSInet, a new open-access network database of plant water potential measurements. psinetrcn.github.io/posts/2025-0...

It's not advanced. It's a glorified search engine at the absolute best. Y'all are delusional if you think otherwise and honestly, deeply anti-humanist.

I really liked this idea of using a histogram as a legend in a choropleth map (since land isn't unemployed; people are), so I made a little guide to doing it with #rstats, {ggplot2}, and {patchwork} www.andrewheiss.com/blog/2025/02...

ok but like, how are we getting any work done. i'm trying to tippy tap away at my silly little keyboard but every fifteen minutes or so the new stupidest thing anyone's ever done happens.

Definitely an unoccupied space in the baking blogosphere for recipes that incorporate higher fiber and protein without wildly changing recipes to incorporate ridiculously expensive alternative ingredients.

“The thing that I can’t get over is that the actual richest man in the world directed my fucking firing. I make $50k a year and work to keep drinking water safe. The richest man in the world decided that was an expense too great for the American taxpayer.”

if I were writing stories about the gov "firing thousands of probationary workers" I would probably rewrite as "firing thousands of new hires -- who are often on a status called "probation" --" because I think the general understanding of "probation" is "in trouble for something they did"

Pretty much every single person among the 100,000s the Trump administration is summarily firing is someone who works hard at a job where they earn much less than they could in the private sector, precisely because they believe in public service.

Is your NSF grant on this list? Reach out if so! Ted Cruz released a list of grants flagged for DEI or "neo-Marxist class warfare propaganda" from his Oct. report. NSF is using keywords from that report for their review, though Cruz's list is likely larger. www.commerce.senate.gov/2025/2/cruz-...

Is it weird there were two unrelated flying moustache ads? That's weird right?

Ecologists given the same dataset diverge in their statistical approach and come up with different answers. New paper by Gould et al. 🌏 bmcbiol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10....

the hostility toward civil servants says so much about these people. they cannot imagine people who would devote their lives, earn modest salaries, work without much acclaim, all to help develop, support, & promote american public policy. you know, ppl who believe in the public good.

apparently it is international "announce your festival lineup" day... stoked to announce our @brutalassault debut and our triumphant (well, hopefully) return to @post_festival this summer. we are gonna #postemostonerdeathgaze the fuck outta y'all and STILL MORE TO COME

And so it was.

Misinformation about the presidential memo on Lumbee recognition is frustrating but not unexpected given the complexity of the issue. Here is a short FAQ followed by suggested readings to help clear the air.

People not understanding the importance of the Humanities is precisely why we need the Humanities.

Hi! Quick note: The Onion accidentally posted a stock photo from a vendor with an AI generated image in it. We pulled the post down once we found that out. Our commitment to not using AI is very real. It's in the union contract to disclose it if we ever do. World is a slop minefield and we're sorry.

Such is the endlessness, yea, the intolerableness of all earthly effort.

President Trump has signed an executive action ordering federal agencies to bring their workers back to the office full time. Roughly 1.1 million federal employees are telework-eligible.

A critical read for anyone who has used or is thinking of using #TRY plant trait data -- "Currently, ecological analyses using TRY data appear, at best, not as powerful as they can be and, at worst, wrong." -- We likely need to start anew and rebuild how we share, access, and cite #PlantTrait data

The Palisades Fire and Helene do make me wonder if there ever is an adequate level of preparedness we can reach.

Praise be for the one month in Virginia where I can wear sweaters and not die from overheating. I should definitely live somewhere much farther north. It was 13F this morning and I LOVED it.
