What are these odd looking scraps of gold sheet you may wonder? Well, they are fragments of two LBA gorgets belonging to objects found >200 years ago, originally in the collection of @ria.ie but now in @nmireland.bsky.social Meant to fully check them out years ago. A curators work is never done

A very welcome arrival in today’s post. The much anticipated publication of Barry Raftery’s excavation at Rathgall, Co. Wicklow. Beautifully produced by Wordwell and skilfully brought together by Katharina Becker and a team of specialists. Barry would be so proud.

Great thread on amber

Many significant gold objects of the Bronze Age are in @nmireland.bsky.social because of 19th century collectors whose private collections form the core of national museums. One was Dean Henry Dawson who acquired a LBA gorget from Borrisnoe, Co. Tipperary in 1836. One of only nine to survive.

Tom Gauld perfectly sums up my current state of hope and anticipation…

A great @nmireland.bsky.social story in today’s @irishtimes.com

I’ve made the leap and reached for the sky so looking forward to meeting old friends, followers and followees. More about prehistoric gold and archaeology to come like the Shannongrove gorget from Co. Limerick
