Remember the right-wing outrage when Google's Gemini generated images of an Asian female Pope last year? Now we have an AI Pope Trump. Of course, it was never about truth, authenticity, or history, but only about power, about who gets to rewrite history and who gets relegated to a subaltern role

Together with Jing Zeng and @rupertkiddle.com we're guest editing a special issue of the Journal of #Computational #Communication Research on "Computational Approaches to Researching Short Videos": journal.computationalcommunication.org/announcement...

ICA 2027 to be held in Glasgow rather than in Chicago as originally planned. Really the only move in a climate that jeopardizes every part of the conference's acronym - international, communication, and association.

Which app are Berliners using to track/plan traveling around Berlin+Brandenburg? The rookie mistake of using Google maps just prolonged my trip by 30-40 mins, so I have way too much time to spend looking out of the train windows...

This looks like... Any genai tool with internet connection? I frankly don't get why Google is doing this to itself.

The April 2025 transparency report from X, required under the DSA, is out. Content moderation has been a big theme. This is the language breakdown of moderators in the EU (table ⬇️). The EU has 20+ official languages. … 🤔 Report: transparency.x.com/assets/dsa/t...

“You don’t like AI therapists because they’re a threat to your income” No, I don’t like AI therapists because they are harmful!

Ok I was writing something on LinkedIn and ran out of the character limit there (again). What sort of platforms are people using nowadays for more extended writing? I could just do a blog page on my website ofc, but somehow this doesn't feel like the best idea (but maybe it, in fact, is?)

⚡️ Viktoriia Project: a story of captivity and torture endured by journalist Roshchyna and thousands of Ukrainians imprisoned by Russia

Oh, this escalated quite a bit.

New paper out in Nature Communications 📌 @anetilab.bsky.social members @lgajo.bsky.social and @johanneswachs.bsky.social with @loreb92.bsky.social and Federico Battiston explore "The dynamics of leadership and success in software development teams" 👾 Link to paper ➡️ www.nature.com/articles/s41...

So Cambridge analytica all over again, huh? 🥱

That's really bad ethics-wise. As someone who works at UZH, I feel like we definitely do need better ethical review procedures. (And no, I don't know which research group(s) was involved).

🚨 SCOOP: Thousands of civil servants have chatted nearly 45,000 times with a proprietary generative AI system, Redbox. The government won't say what advice they're getting, and how or if those outputs filter into policy. My latest for @newscientist.com www.newscientist.com/article/2478...

NEW: Researchers secretly ran a massive, unauthorized AI persuasion experiment on Reddit users in a large debate subreddit. The bots' answers mined the original posters' identity and post history to generate its answers & created identities such as "rape survivor" www.404media.co/researchers-...

It's spring break here, so I will log off this website and go touch some (quite literal, Scottish) grass

At this point my and other UK and EU universities need to take a much firmer stand of solidarity on behalf of our colleagues in Belgrade. They're fighting the kind of authoritarian destruction of intellectual life that threatens us all in Europe.

A federal judge ruled today that Google illegally monopolized parts of its advertising technology business. It’s the second time in the space of a year that Google was found to have violated US antitrust law.

Trump threatens to block all 10,000 international students from attending Harvard unless the school turns over student info they’ll use for new visa revocations and deportations. Every day feels like a fresh round of this country stabbing itself in the face. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/17/u...

New from 404 Media: we've obtained a leak from inside Palantir describing Palantir's plan to help ICE find people to deport. Includes peoples' location. Palantir is expecting a backlash, preparing comments for employees to tell their family. Says ICE "mature partner" www.404media.co/leaked-palan...

Looks like I will be teaching my "AI, Politics, Society" seminar to Computer Scientists next semester. Incredibly curious to compare how differently this will go compared to my current class of Social Scientists.

Do you want all your Facebook and Instagram photos, posts and data to be used by Meta to train AI? If not, then *now* is the time to object. This article explains how. datenschutz-hamburg.de/news/meta-st...

The Canadian Association of University Teachers warns academics against traveling to the United States: “Academics (…) who have themselves expressed negative views about the Trump administration, should be particularly cautious about U.S. travel.” apnews.com/article/cana...

As more and more apps integrate "AI" where no one ever asked for it, we're running into a massive problem—possibly bigger than deliberate disinformation campaigns ever were: we're actively polluting our information environment with bullshit. What remains is hearsay, emotion, and AI hallucinations.

I’m sorry but if your students use AI to write papers and you use AI to grade them zero school is happening. You are running together on a hamster wheel

Two weeks this summer you don’t want to miss. Join the MethodsNET Summer School at CEU in Vienna.

Did ACM Comms really need to ai generate their new cover? (A rhetorical question, just why...)

What's going on this past week, I've been getting at least 2 review requests per day, on one day 4, that's way above what I normally get. Is this some crazy submission period I don't know about? (if you, reader, sent me a review request and I haven't replied yet, that's why)

To put the scale of this cut into a European perspective and highlight why I personally don't think Europe can/will be able to attract a mass (!) exodus of US scientists: the whole budget of SNF, main Swiss funding body, for 2021-2024 was 4.6 billion CHF (CHF is now worth slightly more than USD).

Send in your abstracts and/or spread the word about our co-edited special issue of IJPP on the AI hype - or, more formally, myths and magical discourse about it :)

What are the most popular (and free) "AI detectors"? Any officially in use by Unis? I know they don't work, this is actually to illustrate to the students exactly how badly these tools fail. For now I only added zerogpt, looking to source more, not sure which to choose
