1/ Imagine sitting in the vacuum of empty space and applying an electric field. You'll find that at some nonzero rate electrons and positrons start appearing from the vacuum and remaining indefinitely. This is a thread about the Schwinger mechanism of spontaneous electron-positron pair creation.

So no joke: the dictatorship in 1970s Argentina once banned Venn diagrams. Because they could be seen as finding common ground between two (apparently) different groups, and if you’re a dictator, unity is a threat. There’s an artist whose work revolves around this!

Came upon David Thouless’ grave in Grantchester today. Does anyone know the meaning of the symbol at the bottom right?
