W.E.B. Du Bois on the white takeover of southern public schools after Reconstruction. Not a coincidence that the chapter, "Back Towards Slavery," follows his analysis of the eventual dedegration of the public school system. Attacks on education are vital to (re)instituting authoritarian rule.

I canceled class today. It just made sense. A lot of snow and it’s a Friday. But I still had a couple of conversations with students in my civil rights class who didn’t get the email and they were so enthusiastic about the class!

This is very captain obvious of me, but there's no such thing as joking or ironic about being a nazi, doing the salute, displaying a swatstika, etc., etc. A nazi is a nazi is a nazi. And a fascist is a fascist is a fascist.

Totally agree. We have a responsibility to encourage students to think critically (and historically) and to use what they learn in class to understand and engage the world around them. My civil rights history class has been hitting those points home in a way I have not experienced

Unfortunately, this is the last 70+ years of conservative politics if we count white flight from public schools after the Brown v. Board of Education decision. It was the essence of Reaganism in the 1980s as well
