W.E.B. Du Bois on the white takeover of southern public schools after Reconstruction. Not a coincidence that the chapter, "Back Towards Slavery," follows his analysis of the eventual dedegration of the public school system. Attacks on education are vital to (re)instituting authoritarian rule.

We really went from, “We can’t possibly defund the police,” to “let’s defund everything else.” Smh

Every time I watch Severance, I think, "Man, I should teach this in my labor history class or at least have us discuss an episode."

Interesting. I wonder if this will go all the way up to SCOTUS though

This sucks. And there's faculty there who don't know about this development. I'm afraid all of this instability is going to trigger job cuts. I wouldn't wish what happened to us to happen to anyone. Hopefully, folks can fight back

Who says police abolition is “unrealistic” and impossible? www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcn...

I canceled class today. It just made sense. A lot of snow and it’s a Friday. But I still had a couple of conversations with students in my civil rights class who didn’t get the email and they were so enthusiastic about the class!

This is very captain obvious of me, but there's no such thing as joking or ironic about being a nazi, doing the salute, displaying a swatstika, etc., etc. A nazi is a nazi is a nazi. And a fascist is a fascist is a fascist.

Scheduled to discuss Malcolm X's "Message to the Grassroots" today in my civil rights movement class. RIP

I believe this administration descends into historic levels of disapproval in 9 months

I hope some independent labor economists are keeping track of all of the federal firings b/c we’re looking at higher unemployment. This administration obviously has an incentive to suppress these stats

Totally agree 🙏🏿

So, he really went there, eh? "If you think I'm overreacting and sounding the alarm too soon, consider this: It took the Nazis one month, three weeks, two days, 8 hours and 40 minutes to dismantle a constitutional Republic." www.fox32chicago.com/news/pritzke...

Totally agree. We have a responsibility to encourage students to think critically (and historically) and to use what they learn in class to understand and engage the world around them. My civil rights history class has been hitting those points home in a way I have not experienced

Great column calling out the bad-faith critiques of identity politics from centrist Democrats and the dangers of abandoning marginalized folks. Also, Traister illustrates how "identity" issues are imbued in labor policy and we can treat them as such while also maintaining a critique of elite capture

Unfortunately, this is the last 70+ years of conservative politics if we count white flight from public schools after the Brown v. Board of Education decision. It was the essence of Reaganism in the 1980s as well

It’s weird how we’ve memory holed the fact that Obama entered his first term with a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate and a majority in the House and McConnell’s response was “We’re going to make Obama a one-term president,” not “there’s little we can do”

Another day of teaching histories that the right-wing and this administration doesn't want us to teach. You know, that "woke" stuff. (We're talking about civil rights and Black radicalism during the Red Scare today.)

It might be a minute before I get on another plane 😬
