This was explained to me in a new and enlightening way the other day: This corruption is a way for the Trump family to turn their current political power into long-term financial power that will influence the country beyond the next four years

Very cool to see the Navy accidentally dropped $180M in the sea when your entire field has been decimated by federal funding cuts of a similar magnitude

This supposed "overenrollment problem" is inconsistent with the literature, which shows higher education is a good bet even for marginal students

It's notable to me that in Harvard's messaging about the value of research, none of the examples come from education, or even from the social sciences. I'm curious about ways to better demonstrate the value of social science research. How can we address this? www.harvard.edu/research-fun...

I have about 15 PSLF payments remaining, and I'm experiencing first hand how strong (and arguably distorting) the incentives get as you approach 120 payments We really need a different structure where, for example, 20% of the debt is forgiven each year starting in year five

The 1st hearing in the 3 cases where ed researchers are suing the Trump admin will take place on Thursday, asking the court to temporarily restore the studies, data collections and personnel that DOGE and Ed Sec'y McMahon cut. Round up here: hechingerreport.org/proof-points...

Education Researchers Sue Trump Administration, Testing Executive Power by @jillbarshay.bsky.social www.kqed.org/mindshift/65...

There has been a lot of great journalism lately about federal funding cuts hitting the hard sciences I would love to see more attention on the cuts hitting the social sciences, which, anecdotally, seems larger in percentage terms

Important paper that we need to make sure no Republican politicians ever see

A few new accreditors want federal recognition. Their leaders are tied to predatory for-profit colleges, some of which defrauded students. My latest: www.newamerica.org/education-po...

"The administration wanted to both eliminate the Dept. of Education & use it to micromanage campuses. It cited falling test scores while also cutting those same tests. It vowed to better manage student aid while firing some of its most expert & experienced staff." www.chronicle.com/article/thre...

These cuts to higher ed could perhaps be a net benefit to society if the savings were going towards, say, increased support for Medicaid, infrastructure investments, or even deficit reduction. But that's not what they're going towards. They're going towards tax cuts largely for the rich.

Not the most concerning thing here, but... Arizona State *University* and Grand Canyon *University* are not community colleges

Now do sales taxes

One other little wrinkle with this bill: how exactly is ED supposed to implement these very complex changes with half the staff it had a couple months ago?

There are actually some things I like in this bill*, but the key thing to remember is these savings coming from the Pell Grant and student loan programs are going to be used to fund tax cuts mostly for the rich www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

New findings on the impact of ASAP Ohio on labor market outcomes, extending the length of follow-up from six to eight years After eight years, ASAP students earned 14% more than control group students, larger than the 12% difference observed after six years www.mdrc.org/work/publica...

Trump Threatens To Defund Beauty Schools That Don’t Comply With MAGA Standards

"This paper studies whether working from home (WFH) affects workers' performance in public sector jobs... we find that WFH increases productivity by 12%." @afenizia.bsky.social Evidence that administrations that reject WFH harm efficiency. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

I've discovered this cool new weight loss technique called "getting a stomach virus from your toddler once a month"

ERIC lives!

This is a great piece about the North Carolina community college system's proposed new funding model that goes all-in on workforce development. Between this and the Next NC scholarship, that state is trying some big new things in higher education.

New from @jessicablake.bsky.social and me: Trump signed a bunch of education-related executive orders tonight. Here's what you need to know about the key higher ed ones. www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

@katrinamillerphd.bsky.social & I took a look at over 400 active National Science Foundation grants that got killed in the past few days. Here's our story (gift link) nyti.ms/4jp4aOx

Seems like there's a bipartisan opportunity here to expand the family social safety net if Democrats are willing to stomach the focus on increased fertility

The attacks on higher education are not, in fact, popular, despite what you've been hearing from pundits www.reuters.com/world/us/tru...

If state governments have to spend more on Medicaid, there's a good chance we'll see cuts to state higher education funding

Researchers and scientists don't typically do full-throated public messaging about the importance of their work for society. So it has been kind of nice to see Harvard doing that on our behalf.

Harvard sued the Trump admin today 💪🏽🥳💯 www.harvard.edu/research-fun...

Practically, what does this mean? The government is saying it will go back to garnishing wages, tax returns, social security payments, etc. in order to collect money from the >5 million people currently in default on student loans. I'll make this a lil mini thread that highlights the key points.

The number of international students hit by the Trump administration's visa actions is likely much larger than reported. For example, Northwest Missouri State has 43 revocations--twice as many as the University of Michigan. The regional public angle here deserves more attention.

Trump’s Funding Freezes Halt Medical Research, Deaf Education Training

Another tiny, obscure corner of the Education Department is scheduled to lose funding this week. hechingerreport.org/proof-points...

Congratulations to all the pundits who spent the last week saying this is good politics for Trump

Institute of Education Sciences cuts imperil high-quality research, lawsuits allege Two separate complaints say the Education Department’s downsizing of IES was unlawful and will erode data collection and analysis. #EdResearch www.k12dive.com/news/educati...

Jerome Powell might be the public figure who has best embodied nonpartisanship in the Trump years I.e., he makes decisions/statements without regard to political reactions, as opposed to making decisions/statements that he thinks will be *perceived* as nonpartisan

Nonprofit research organizations, take note

New paper from the Consumer Finance Institute estimates a 1pp rise in unemployment during the Great Recession caused a 7% rise in outstanding debt and 6% rise in defaults, and the recession accounted for 19-32% of the increase in undergrad student debt www.philadelphiafed.org/-/media/FRBP...

BREAKING: On Friday, the federal government issued new demands of Harvard University. The university's lawyers just responded: back off.

"Now the responsibility of posting these grant opportunities is poised to rest with DOGE — and if its employees delay those postings or stop them altogether, “it could effectively shut down federal-grant making,” said one federal official who spoke on the condition of anonymity" wapo.st/42uavRC
