41, autistic enby. Self diagnosis is valid, vaccines don't cause autism. My autism defines me. Yes it does. Pronouns are they/them or she/her.

Definitely. I feel like the huge shift for me was sometime after grad school when I started learning more about the neurodiversity movement. That's when I started doing more of my own indpeendent reading through things like scholarly journals and also published books. #AutChat A2

[cn: ableism] I grew up during the 1980s. I feel like a lot of the world's understanding of autism back then came from a heavily-misguided book called "The Empty Fortress" by Bruno Bettleheim, someone who faked his credentials in order to become perceived as an autism expert?!? #AutChat A1

A0: Hi! I'm Alyssa, I'm Autistic, and my generation is the first one where any of the autistic people in my family have *paperwork* but it's not the first generation of my family to *have autistic people in it.* #AutChat

Please keep in mind that everyone has had really diverse experiences with today’s #AutChat questions regardless of which generation we grew up in – we’re here to explore those differences rather than make assumptions about what it was like for other people.

Hello, I am Solveig! #AutChat A0

Questions are prefaced Q0, Q1, Q2, etc. When you reply, preface posts with A0, A1, etc & include "#AutChat" so others see them! Feel free to skip questions for any reason, or respond to them later. Please capitalize the tag as #AutChat to make it more accessible to screenreaders.

We used to post Wakelet transcripts of our weekly Twitter chats to autchat.com. We also linked to them on the #AutChat tag and on Facebook. However, at this point in our transition to BlueSky, we don’t know how to integrate Wakelet/similar. For the time being, we do not make transcripts.

#AutChat is a tag for autistic people & "autistic cousins" (people with similar experiences due to hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, ADHD, etc). We welcome autistic/similar people whether formally diagnosed, self-diagnosed, or questioning/wondering if they are autistic/similar.

Welcome to #AutChat, a weekly BlueSky chat for autistic & similar people at Sundays 1pm Pacific/4pm Eastern/21:00 UTC / 9pm GMT! autchat.com/faq/ #AutChat hosts chats on topics related to our experiences as neurodivergent people. See our past topics here: autchat.com/all-topics/

@sodafountainrag.bsky.social Random question, do you play the Pokemon TCG app game?

Something I was going to mention is that I seem to hear/red a lot about people who do really well with timers, and can do things fairly well as timed activities. Examples: 15 minutes of cleaning, 1 hour of reading, and so forth. This is very effective for some people. Not me?!? #AutChat

I think that developing strictly neutral feelings about it is what helped me with it. I wanted to see it for what it is, with zero judgment, and to figure out what I can do to create for myself a life that feels like it works the best for me. I'm not there yet, but I think I'm closer. #AutChat A4

Don't remember having it much as a kid but I think it was mitigated by spending most time in highly structured environments & I was less aware of myself so didn't notice it. Once I hit adulthood it became very noticeable and disabling. In the past few years it isn't as bad for a few reasons #AutChat

I feel like my experience with inertia has changed based on my understanding of it. Also, I think I made the intentional decision to view it as a thing with neutral feelings about it. I'm not happy or unhappy about it. It just is. #AutChat A3

I guess it's more or less something that I just think it's helpful for me to better understand about myself. Like, for example, I find it difficult to keep up with doing the dishes. So I can ask myself questions like, what conditions are causing hesitation? #AutChat A2

#AutChat

Sure, I definitely do. Though I feel like I go through phases in terms of how it works... And it might depend on how I'm feeling in a given day/week/month, and it might depend on which activity we're talking about. #AutChat A1

Autistic inertia is an autistic experience described as difficulty doing what we intend to do. Sometimes it is also known as monotropism. It can significantly affect the lives of the neurodivergent people who live with it. #AutChat

Q0: Introduce yourself! Say anything you like about yourself or your interest in #AutChat or in today's topic, autistic inertia. Quick reference for this week's #AutChat questions (please wait till they're posted to answer): autchat.com/autistic-int...
