It’s #BarbieDay! Do you know where her name comes from? Here’s a short about its etymology! youtube.com/shorts/6JomS... #Etymology #Video #WordNerd #Linguistics #Language #Words #HistoricalLinguistics #LingComm #Barbie

#SundayPixWords One of my favourite pieces of art in our house. Calligraphy by our family friend, artist Roberta Huebener, who sent these kinds of lovely pieces as Christmas and birthday cards for years.

@ottawacity.ottawa.ca is launching a consultation on the redesign of Riverdale Avenue in Old Ottawa South. Happy to see that two of the three proposed designs included separated cycle tracks. I frequently used Riverdale to cycle when I lived in OOS, and now use it to bypass Bank and go to the canal.

#SundayPixBW not black and white film, but it almost could be.

#SundayPixBW Another very important black and white.

#SundayPixBW Four generations & five generations. The baby in the first is my mom, in the second it’s me. So 1950 & 1976.

#SundayPixBW Any excuse to go back to some of my favourite black and white photos! My parents with me. 🥰

Hey! It’s #NationalPigDay! And as chance would have it, we have a short video all about piggy etymologies! www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsJG... #PigDay #Pigs #Etymology #Video #WordNerd #Linguistics #Words #HistoricalLinguistics

Our video “Gospel” is also appropriate for the combination of #BlackHistoryMonth and #WomensHistoryMonth, with a focus on some of the amazing women of the early days of Soul, like Sister Rosetta Tharpe. youtu.be/K06AqhjjbdA #BlackHistoryMonth #WomensHistoryMonth #Gospel

As #BlackHistoryMonth comes to a close, and in anticipation of #WomensHistoryMonth, it seems a good time to repost our video on Soul Food and Early Black Women's Writing: youtu.be/QbuABBPej9E #BlackHistoryMonth #WomensHistoryMonth #SoulFood #RecipeBooks #Video

Given the state of the world, I want to be sure to note how grateful I am that voting in the provincial election just now took 3 minutes, in addition to the 5 minutes it took me to detour out of my regular walk home from the bus stop (I’m working from home this afternoon)

So many of you have really lowered your game to make today's #SundayPixBadPhotos feed such tremendous fun. Thank you for showing us the worst of you :-) Properly good bad photos indeed. #photography đź“· Feed: bsky.app/profile/did:...

#SundayPixBadPhotos Me trying to take a picture of the back of my head to see if I’d done the french braid well. Everything about this photo is poor, including my geometry and the fact that you can’t actually see my braid. (This was in the old house, the bathroom ceiling here is fine!)

From Religious Studies at York Twitter account: The administration at York University has suspended admissions to the Religious Studies program . . . The faculty have written this statement. We ask you to will distribute it widely and write to York's administration to protest this decision.

#SundayPixBadPhoto Me trying to use my phone camera to look at something in the basement ceiling because I was too lazy to fetch a step stool. (I was trying to figure out if the hole around the pipe was properly sealed).

After a few failed attempts, I realized it would be easier to showcase my handkerchiefs over on insta. You can find them and me at bookvixen75! Just request a follow!

Trying to practice for a choir workshop we’re doing tomorrow, and the cat is literally clawing her way onto my lap/chest/face in her concern for me. She loses her *mind* when I sing, even a tiny bit. Totally doesn’t care when anyone else sings, including my son when he was still a soprano. Just me.

@grammargirl.bsky.social Hey Mignon—I’m catching up slowly on my podcast backlog, so I may be way late to this one, but I just listened to your piece on the use of “the” with highways in California. Have you talked or read about this usage in Canada? Because I believe it’s near universal in Ontario

York University recently announced that admissions to the Classics and Classical Studies programs have been suspended for Fall 2025. Classical Studies colleagues and students at York would be grateful for letters of support. How you can help: www.cac-scec.ca/2025/02/supp... AncientBluesky

It’s #NationalBatteryDay, and naturally, that brings to mind potatoes! Or at least it does if you’ve ever made a potato battery – which was the inspiration for our video about that classic science project and its etymological connections. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdPQ... #Etymology #Battery #Potato

This is straight out of the Ontario-universities-have-been-doing-this-for-a-while-now playbook (see Laurentian and Queens for egregious examples). It’s truly horrifying, but maybe now that it’s in Toronto people will notice? Maybe even care?

I continue to enjoy the paradoxical beauty of blooming hibiscus against the snowy February backdrop.

Ok, yeah, that’s quite a bit of snow that fell overnight. And still 10+cm to come this morning. I’d say it’s a good day to wfh. #OttawaStorm
