Seriously, I was sure that libxml2 was maintained by someone at Redhat or something. Apparently it's used and deployed everywhere (from Apple to Microsoft, Google even) and they're not contributing and of course not even donating money. socket.dev/blog/libxml2...

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Brilliant. I love a dedicated librarian youtube.com/shorts/64vi7...

In 1988, IBM tried to seize the whole PC market back and make it proprietary again. Everyone KNEW you couldn't win against IBM. Compaq, and founding CEO Rod Canion, decided to try. Read my latest #history longform on the fight for the soul of the PC. And how Compaq won. every.to/the-crazy-on...

Maybe if the UK government read this piece regarding Palantir and the words of its CEO they would back away from allowing this company access to our NHS!!!!

Climate change: The shit is hitting the fan, and the fan is on maximum.

Gerd is a great speaker! Please drop by next Wednesday to listen to his talk. I guarantee you will learn something new.

Seventeen people were killed by "non-lethal"/"less than lethal" weapons like rubber bullets during the conflict in Northern Ireland, including a 10-year-old boy. We've known these weapons can kill since the 1970s. www.patfinucanecentre.org/state-violen...

A gay man, who died by suicide as a result of his sexuality, made one of the single biggest contributions to espionage and ending WW2 years earlier than would have otherwise been the case. Alan Turing is only one of hundreds of examples as to why the intelligence services should support Pride.

I am old enough to remember the arrival of the truly global and astonishingly useful worldwide web. I really did not expect to witness its death, poisoned by carelessness and greed.

The vast majority of the world, which still at least aspires to the rule of law, needs to fight back against this anarchic parasite 🇺🇸 From: @osma https://mas.to/@osma/114634810924411421

The best response to Abundance talk is a single tweet from Ruairi Wood, RIP brother.

This is so completely true. Huntsman are scary in the corner of the eye but when you see them properly they are amazing. (….just don't mention the weird leg joints that mean they can get through door/window weatherproofing seals.… oh, oops…. Well at least you didn't mention the average size….)

I decided to become a journalist aged fifteen after reading ‘1984’ and being appalled at the thought that governments could rewrite history. Orwell knew the USSR did it. Now China pretends the Tiananmen massacre didn’t happen. It did. I was there, and saw it for myself.

Jonathan Joss was MURDERED. Words matter here. He was MURDERED. it was a HATE CRIME because he is a gay Indigenous man. Say those words. Do not dance around it. He wasn't "killed in a shooting." He was murdered in a hate crime.

Please listen to the UN General Secretary.

Exciting.

For reference, for those owed money by Unbound/Boundless, and for those wishing to know who's involved, Companies House listings are public records find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/0727... and find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/1628...

So, this Unbound/Boundless fiasco. I was going to be polite about it, but after this morning’s email: no

Hungary has become the first EU country to introduce legislation which allows them to ban Pride events. This is a flagrant contravention of EU law regarding freedom of assembly and freedom of expression. The EU must stand firmly with Hungary’s LGBTQ+ communities. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Men are extremely keen to explain to me that Britain *needs* a domestic steel production plant and doesn't necessarily *need* universities. Okay. Steel contributed about £1.7bn to the UK economy in 2024. Universities contributed more than £200bn.

This.

The BBC news is giving a lot of attention to Trump’s restrictions on international students yet is largely uninterested in the U.K. government’s pursuit of the same policy goal. Why?

If you know Tim or myself, you'll know that we are always immensely proud of each others work. Please read this wonderful, but deeply sad piece that has made me cry but is, as always, beautifully written.
