Another nice paper, whats best is that our ex-coworker is one of the author. Great work!

Can AlphaFold refine structures for X-ray & Cryo-EM/ET data? Now it can! Great collab with @moalquraishi.bsky.social and @randyjread.bsky.social led by @alisiafadini.bsky.social and @minhuanli.bsky.social. 🧵below. Code to follow...

I can fly... temporarily

Its the time of the year again, my Bryophyllum daigremontianum is blooming. PS: I know that it is kalanchoe.

Today @gogs-k.bsky.social, @tlhr.bsky.social, and I are launching @bindresearch.org, a UK-based not-for-profit research startup to deliver publicly–available tools and datasets to make intrinsically disordered proteins druggable. 🍝 💊🧲 💻 🦠

This is a room where we turn very modest salaries and budgets (and lots of coffee) into new knowledge, life-saving innovations, and technology that feeds business growth. It's literally the loom that spins hay into gold but these numpties are suddenly worried about the cost of hay.

Coffee coffee coffee in the morning. I love the Tetsu Kasuya brew style, it goes so well with some african single-origins we have.

Another day, another AlphaFold fail? What am I even looking at.

P acquired. hD in progress. State exams passed!

I so much like the quirks of state doctoral exams in Czech academic postgrad. Wish me luck tommorow. (Eg. this is not a PhD thesis defense but a cumulative trivia exam)

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

Great work by Joel Dacks & Cathy Jackson! Arf GTPases, key to eukaryotic organelle dynamics, trace their origins to prokaryotic ArfR GTPases in Asgardarchaeota. Structural and phylogenetic evidence reveals a link to eukaryogenesis and early endomembrane evolution. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

This could be a good time to mention we are looking for a new Lab Manager / Postdoc for the biochemistry lab with expertise protein expression, purification, and protein NMR. Details to follow.

UiB researcher Markus Miettinen is among the first scientists to provide a detailed description of protein clumps associated with Huntington's disease. These findings, which may pave the way for new diagnostic tools and treatments, are presented in Nature Communications👨‍🔬 @natureportfolio.bsky.social

New year, new buffers. I hoped that until the last half a year of my PhD, I wont get any more new proteins, but well. I was mistaken

I don't know how you, but to me, assigning and generally working with NMR spectra is far more entertaining than working with cryo-EM data in cryosparc. Or maybe I just wasn't lucky yet.

We have a #PhD available! I'm really excited about this project, looking at whether and how differences in the #IDRs of paralogous epigenetic enzymes CBP and p300 cause them to behave differently. www.findaphd.com/phds/project...

Gonna repost it again, now that more people follow me. Might come in handy :) thanks for the advice or contacts.

I am looking for an ERC-funded postdoc to work on spatial proteomics of microalgae (red algae and glaucophytes). The ideal candidate will have experience with mass spec and data analysis (R), but above all a keen interest in broad eukaryote evolution and protists #protistsonsky (1/2)

We shouldn’t accept that a CEO killer must get a national manhunt when cops don’t solve most murders at all. A migrant teenager was just murdered in NYC, cops just killed a guy here — the lives of these other people are worth just as much as that CEO.

If you are interested in Mycobacterial transcription regulation, we provide a new story with a novel transcription factor "CrsL" on M. smegmatis. This project was done in collaboration between partners at Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague and us, at CEITEC Masaryk University.

The mycobacterial nucleoid-associated protein NapM exhibits stress-induced septal localization and modulates cell envelope gene expression https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.11.29.625984v1

Wish us luck with this story, a novel interaction partner. Will share a preprint. CrsL, a novel transcription factor in Mycobacterium smegmatis, small ~5kDa protein interacting with CarD.

Thank you so much to whoever put this very comprehensive list of #science Bsky starter packs together. This is just amazing: docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Any suggestions or ideas where to look for postdoc positions in Europe? To be honest, I am kinda lost in the academia. #phd #postdoc #AcademySky

Winter came early, with Catherine (25th) on snow, the saying goes, that the Christmas will be muddy yet again.

Hands on the most genial thing I saw any student do. Dont want to sit infront of the FPLC when optimizing runs? Well, stream it to your pc in the wetlab where you can work on something else.

What kind of windows do you have in your lab? (CEITEC MU Cryo-EM core facility)

I am always amazed how inventive can people be, despite having clear instructions. But filling pH meter storage container with calibration solution pH 9.0 was not on the list. I am just absolutely chuffed.

Nice orange tones during yesterdays sunset at MUNI campus.
