Yesterday, I was just reading a Hacker News comment about R’s annoying all-or-nothing namespacing, and then R 4.5.0 comes out with `use()`! Import just what you need: use(“dplyr”, c(“mutate”, “summarize)) #RStats

Heads-up for fans of trait-based models & trophic interactions! A fresh & fruity paper led superbly by Andressa Cabral & Renske Onstein @naturalis.bsky.social investigates the role of seed-dispersing animals in shaping pantropical plant diversity. nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10....

New online! Biodiversity–ecosystem function research must consider abundance and not just diversity

This is bad. And it’s where universities should band together and take action.

New paper out in Ecology Letters (open access): I and Daniel Matute consider 'species sorting' -- a bias in the outcome of secondary contact following the allopatric stage of speciation -- as a reason for the much-observed pattern of elevated trait differences in sympatric close relatives

@dangaristo.bsky.social recently shared that the NSF graduate research fellowship program got wacked by 50% @standupforscience.bsky.social @phlscienceaction.bsky.social I took a deeper dive here - call your senator, 202-224-3121. Revive and expand the NSFGRFP open.substack.com/pub/eduardoe...

#fellowship opportunity for graduate students working with #invertebrates #entomology #astacology #unionids If you know any grad students doing invert work, the Smithsonian didn't fill their IZ fellowship. I received this award last year and had a blast. www.facebook.com/share/p/1QNM...

This post by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum demonstrates clear defiance of the Endangered Species Act. He states that regulation is not the solution. Innovation is needed- in concert with regulation- to find new paths to recovery while protecting what still exists. #Resist

On the #postdoc hunt and would love any leads or sources folks have in evolution and ecology. Trained in systematics, several genetics techniques, ecological modeling with an emphasis in aquatic environments and North American crayfish.

I say this every time de-extinction comes up: it makes no sense to devote science to bringing back extinct animals when we can’t be bothered to keep extant ones alive in the first place.

The IUCN Red List has 47,187 living species that are currently threatened with extinction, but here is a genetically engineered big dumb wolf thing that serves absolutely no functional ecological purpose and isn't even close to being the thing that we pretend it is. 🧪🌏

Scientists love to debate and argue, but if there are 3 things every scientist absolutely agrees on, it's that: 1. Climate change is real 2. Vaccines work 3. Those are NOT dire wolves 😤 🧪

We are risking plunging the United States into a dark age of entomology next week. USDA programs are facing massive lay-offs next week and the public should be aware of the impact. If you care about food systems, forests, invasive species, this thread is for you. Read Below: 🧪 #entomology #science

NIH slashes overheads, fires directors and staff, freezes funds, halts trials, interrupts research, stalls grant review, and terminates 100s of grants on infectious disease, vaccines, mRNA, DEI, LGBTQ health. NIH director, to Bari Weiss: Scientists are just upset because they didn't vote for Trump.

The more people we speak to, the more we hear that the public is uninformed about what’s happening. Those who read only “the Times and the Journal,” as one scientist said, or “still use Twitter,” are getting poor info. Please get your friends and colleagues to Bluesky and to indep political news.

Can we get more of this? “The Japanese American National Museum will ‘scrub nothing,’ Fujioka said, and instead will highlight the importance of DEI. “Our community is based on diversity, equity is guaranteed to us in the Constitution, and inclusion is what we believe in,” Fujioka said.

Well that's depressing. They're shutting down CIPRES after the NSF cut funding.

"I don't want a Disney vacation of our history! I don't a whitewashed history, I don't want a homogenized history. Tell me the wretched truth about America, because that speaks to our greatness" -- 20 hours into his speech, Cory Booker is spitting absolute 🔥

NEW: Internal staff email from Smithsonian secretary Lonnie Bunch addressing Trump’s executive order. “As always, our work will be shaped by the best scholarship, free of partisanship, to help the American public better understand our nation’s history, challenges and trumphs.”

Jay Bhattacharya just sent a letter to all NIH staff, amidst the Musk/Trump chaos, and we have it for you! We unpack Bhattacharya's 'anti-vax grifterese' (h/t @angierasmussen.bsky.social ) and point out what he is really saying. You'll want to click and zoom in on this one.

The destruction of American science continues apace. Early career people are the most likely to be seeking to leave. One of my about-to-graduate PhDs is seriously considering a job offer in Germany, even though it would involve lower pay. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Very helpful info for those with NSF funding!

Really looking forward to reading this paper by Christina McCabe @jdtonkin.bsky.social and others! www.nature.com/articles/s44...

They're terrorizing our federal employees in real ways and the impact is devastating for all of us. I spoke to a VA employee and FBI Agent about what they're experiencing and it will shock you. This is the most important thing I've written. Please read and share. open.substack.com/pub/fpwellma...

Forget the shutdown... the only headline that should be on newspapers is "US President says Free Speech is illegal at DOJ Speech!" And just under that, print Federalist No. 46.

A federal judge in Maryland issued an even more sweeping restraining order on Thursday, surpassing an earlier one from the same day. The order broadly prohibits the Trump administration from implementing any future “reductions in force,” such as this week’s directive to terminate half of the

🚨 The Alarming Moves You Might Have Missed Lost in the noise of the past two weeks, Trump has taken unprecedented steps to undermine the one branch of government he doesn’t fully control — the judiciary.

🧪 The NSF director is lying to you. Let’s fact check 7 claims from yesterday’s letter to the community, while pointing out 3 critical omissions. 🧵

Hearing from a source: "A friend at NCI lost 3 outstanding staff (their words) and tweeted about it. She was suspended for 2 days. No idea how her tweet was flagged." This is for all the people asking us why it's hard to tell what's happening at NIH. Retaliation is real.

The coolest thing I’ve seen today is that a bunch of volunteer public health professionals and developers have restored the CDC website from before January 20th 2025. This differs from an archive in that they want to rebuild the links between pages and replicate the full website.

Don't think this is going to happen? Ask admissions offices if there will be impacts to opportunities. Don't like what you hear? Call your representative and ask what they are doing to stop attacks on higher ed. joshuasweitz.substack.com/p/welcome-to...

Happy to see published this paper from my Postdoc in FFPW USB (Czech Rep): "Contrasting Patterns of Genetic Variability in Pet-Traded Red Swamp Crayfish Procambarus clarkii and Its Feral Populations" doi.org/10.1111/fwb.... Thanks to these amazing collaborators!!

Today is #internationalwomansday , a day to highlight the continuing struggle for women. Last month, I urged women to push the line back for their place in science; today I urge women to push the line back for themselves. 🧵
