I got mad and wrote an article.

I recently developed & taught a 1-credit graduate course titled Computer Programming for Biologists. The students produced some fantastic projects! For the course & for you, I developed tutorials in the Julia programming language. I share these here: darreni.github.io/JuliaProgram... #julialang

Dear scientists at US universities: Trump/Musk continue to freeze your grants. NIH is not reviewing grants nor funding them in council. This is a backhanded, legal method to effectively stop NIH grants. See thread and linked article. Are we going to “keep our heads down” about this?

Federal career workers: We appreciate you and your work. You don't deserve this mistreatment. Here's a file with lots of resources if you are facing illegal termination. docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

At this point, doing science is resisting.

Psst: carcinization is not inevitable! R is for Raninoides, one of the best examples of DEcarcinization. It's a true crab, but its body is elongated and the abdomen sticks out. The wrench and spadelike appendages, and torpedolike body, are good for burrowing (see video, next skeet) #CrabAZ 🦀🧪🦑

Immediately assigning this new paper to my pop gen students! Waples publishes some real hits - "What is a population?" is another instant classic onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

When the dismantlists talk about "trimming the fat" or "bloated" whatever relating to the federal government, remind them that there have been about the same number of federal employees since the 1960s. Meanwhile US population has increased by ~70% and GDP has increased 29-fold.

They’re firing NIH scientists and replacing them with people with this level of crappy chart-making? Sounds like the DOGE kids would benefit from going through the NIH postbac program. 🧪

This blue Lobster was caught off the coast of Portland and returned to the water to continue to grow. Blue lobsters are one in two million.

This excellent interactive tutorial on misleading data visualizations explores the idea of a "counter chart" — the graph you draw in response to refute a misleading claims flowingdata.com/projects/dis...

It’s been buried in all the news today, but every scientist in the US should pay attention to this: Mike Lauer went out on a limb for us all, sending out a memo saying institutes should start awarding grants. And it looks like Trump/Musk fired him for that. 🧪

Ok, I made a new starter pack: Science Job Accounts! I want to try & collect together account that are likely to post jobs/internships/employment opportunities in science. It is heavily US/Ecology based (and would probably be better as a feed). Please suggest other accounts!! go.bsky.app/QPGnfWu

PhD project alert! 🚨 I'm recruiting a PhD student to join my lab and the MacroSize network to investigate the trends, patterns, and processes driving intraspecific variation in fish body size in the Anthropocene. Exciting opportunity to explore ecological dynamics in a changing world! :) 🌎🐟🐠🐡

One of the most important roles of the NSF is to support science and tech ecosystem in the US. This ecosystem drives basic science breakthroughs that industry can build on. It also supports the education of a skilled workforce so that actual tech firms don’t have to hire utter imbeciles like these.

Happy birthday to Charles Darwin, who wrote one of the most poetic lines ever dropped in scientific writing: "There is grandeur in this view of life - that from so simple a beginning, endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved."

What can you do? Don’t give up hope. Dictators feed off your hopelessness. Don’t quit. Dictators want you to give up. Punch back. Dictators are bullies, and bullies are cowards. Stay tethered to the truth. Dictators need you to believe their lies. Resist. Stand with others.

Pretty damn good framing for Dems

The world is better because you are in it. Even if society tries to convince you otherwise, your presence makes a difference. You bring something unique and irreplaceable to this world. And no one can take that away from you.

Oh, Humphrey’s Executor? The key decision that keeps the independent agencies independent? Unbelievable. But this is a good reminder that the courts won’t save us. The Supreme Court is likely to either bless, or allow via delay, most of what is happening.

America won the Revolutionary War in part because the red coats kept fighting the “proper” way and got slaughtered. The Democratic leaders are now the Red Coats, ironically. Quit playing nice, the rules have changed. Adapt or become obsolete. #Resist #FightBack

Playing by the old rules is not working. Do more.

An open message to @kenmartin.bsky.social and the Democratic Party. Your words and photo-ops are not working. We need to see fight. We need to see you lay it on the line for what you believe in.This is our Constitution, not some bad policy. It’s to step up and lead or get out of the way. #ALTgov

A lot is happening in US science. Bluesky is the best place to stay up the rolling political crisis in America that is crushing US science. It's also a good place to learn what we all can do. We have a starter pack for this. Please send your colleagues here too. 🧪 go.bsky.app/2K6jTi5

From me: We're rapidly moving to a point where whether Trump will comply with an adverse court order is the only question that matters. The early signs are not encouraging, and it will take more than a court saying "I demand you" to pull out of that crisis. prospect.org/justice/2025...

"It takes years to build a science lab." New post from us. "The long timelines to build up a team... make science research work different than many parts of the private sector." Science is hard to build but easy to break. The uncertainty is right now breaking cancer research. 🧪

Organize! bsky.app/profile/indi...

First: I can’t stop thinking about my amazing colleagues at NSF who are going through this. It’s awful. Also, searching through proposals to remove those that include “broadening participation” is like 👀 going to yield … a lot… since that is a way that we meet the broader impacts mandate…
