Carleton University and the IAGD are putting on an accessible geology field trip on May 11, 2025. We hope you can join us! Details on the attached flyer. Apply at shorturl.at/DkBOO or contact [email protected] for more information.

One week ago, I got to witness an eruption at Kilauea Halemaʻumaʻu crater. The fire fountain was hundreds of feet tall, it was incredible! I am just getting around to playing with my photos from that night, so enjoy this belated look at eruption #11 in the 2025 sequence 😍🌋

Heading home from a wonderful seminar visit to U of Hawaii Hilo and Manoa. Saw humpback whales, sea turtles, amazing landscapes and one of my bucket list natural wonders- a fire fountain!! Thanks Kilauea (episode 11 on 2/25/25 for the volcano nerds who want to know) 🤩

Please read, then call your legislators to demand they protect the most vulnerable in our society. Our daughter with complex medical needs (CDKL5) relies on the protections and supports provided by IDEA and Medicaid to preserve her quality of life. open.substack.com/pub/erinraff...

For folks, trying to figure out how #disability fits into the attacks on #DEIA, (and honestly, the I & A should be a dead giveaway) here is a great explainer from @aapd-disability.bsky.social

Please read and share. But especially share with folks that might not realize how critical Section 504 is to so many people. I tried to write a simple clear explanation at the break. Gift link here: www.startribune.com/why-are-repu...

We just hit our 50 donor target, thank you all so much - I recognized many familiar names on the donor list! February 20 is the finale of this fundraiser so it's not too late to chip in. More funds means we can accept more students, and I am so grateful for everyone's support!

Geo-community: GeoSPACE needs your help. It costs about $2,500 per student to run this accessible field course and many of our students simply can't afford that. Bonus points if you donate this week and help us unlock a donor pledge with 50 donations of any size. Thank you in advance!!

Update: UF has decided my work is exempt from the DEIA ban as long as it focuses on research and doesn't "stray into advocacy". I'm happy I can move forward, but feel like I'm moving forward on a tightrope.

Every single one of my grants is likely to get pulled out of consideration if this is true. I had millions of dollars of potential funding wrapped up into these opportunities, wasted potential for students in Hawai‘i.

Worried about losing access to US federal data that may go off-line, or already is? You’re not alone—but duplication isn’t the answer. Many ongoing efforts have already archived key datasets and many more are ongoing. Check out these existing resources and, if you can, support their work. 🧵

Yesterday UF sent out a stop work order on DEIA activities, impacting my entire research program, likely including @geospace-field.bsky.social. I put my whole heart into my accessibility work. It's hard to see it, and so many other worthy equity projects crushed 💔 www.alligator.org/article/2025...

There are plenty of awful things happening in the world right now, but I got a nose boop from a little manatee yesterday and I'm gonna coast on that happy feeling all week 😊

Traveling home from facilitating a workshop on creating accessible field trips for UVA's environmental science department. So happy to see the energy and enthusiasm for creating accessible field labs for their students! Big thanks to grad student Heather Christensen and crew for organizing.

Trump has signed an executive order eliminating all funding for diversity and inclusion in the federal government, sending home DEI staff who will then be laid off. The historical echo for this is when Woodrow Wilson resegregated the federal government in 1913. We have reached the second nadir.

You had different dreams for yourself than having to meet this shit historical moment. I did too. I did too.

Back in Iceland aurora hunting, and the hunting has been good so far! #Iceland #aurora

Paid summer internships in geodesy! Know of an undergraduate student who might be interested in learning more about geodesy? Let them know about MSU's new summer geodesy internship program. We have funding for multiple interns next summer. Application deadline is Feb. 1, 2025. bit.ly/3CKbZ0O

I saw folks posting favorite images from 2024, so here goes! These two photos of the total eclipse were taken at a Choctaw viewing event at Wheelock Academy - the boarding school my great granny attended. There was something poetic about seeing the sun burst out from the eclipse over that place!

We tried for sunrise photos this morning at Driftwood Beach while visiting family in coastal Georgia. Socked in with fog and we never did see the sun, but got some interesting moody shots anyway.

I taught an ENTIRE course on why this mine is representative of the “nobody wins” angle of the green energy transition without embracing the “reduce” portion of “reduce, reuse, recycle.” This is an unmeasurably important site, but maybe, just maybe, the byline should mention that mining this deposit

One day I will post something without typos, but today is not that day lol. But anyway, please share this post, especially with geoscience workplaces outside of academia, or people that have left the geoscience workforce due to access issues. Those groups will be harder the reach than academics.

Ableism is glorifying the 'resilience' of disabled individuals while ignoring the systemic barriers we face. Stop praising perseverance in a broken system—demand accountability and change it. #Disability #HumanRights #Poverty #a11y #Equity #WeAreBillionStrong

If you are still around #AGU24, I got the absolute graveyard shift of a talk slot - the last talk in a Friday afternoon session. Come to the Future of Field Camp session to hear me talk about EASI (Ethical, Accessible, Sustainable & Inclusive) field education!

I finally made it to AGU after a rough travel day! If anyone wants to find me at #AGU24, I'm either in a talk or in that Relax Lounge. Like, basically gonna camp out in that lounge lol

Geoscientists with disabilities at #AGU24 - come say hello at Pod 5 at 1:30 pm every afternoon this week. Hope to see you there!

#AGU2024: Here are some presentations and events we'd like to highlight for next week. If you have an AGU presentation or event relevant to disability and/or diversity in the geosciences you'd like to highlight, please reply to this post with details. Let's build a list!

Students: Looking for an excellent field course in planetary geology and volcanology? Need field course credits in an accessible format? If yes to either or both, join us this summer for GeoSPACE, lead by myself and some fantastic colleagues!

Enjoyed the talk from @jessepopp.bsky.social today about the cool research that can be accomplished when scientists and local tribal communities work together on environmental studies. Thanks for coming to UF, Jesse!

Hey Everyone, The IAGD was on Twitter/X for more than a decade. It's hard to switch platforms and lose all of that, so please give us a follow here! We are working to make the geosciences a more inclusive place for everyone, especially people with disabilities.

GeoSPACE is making the move to Blue Sky! Follow at @geospace-field.bsky.social for project updates, field accessibility tips, and us bragging about our amazing student alumni. And if you are looking for an accessible geoscience field camp, check us out 🧪

Hi new followers! I'm still trying to figure out what I wanna do on this app. I work on accessible field work and disability and inclusion in science and other stuff. I'm also an avid photographer and crafter. Not sure what y'all will get yet, but welcome anyway!
