We offer a delightful 9 mile return journey alongside Bala Lake, through the beautiful Snowdonia National Park. Our narrow gauge steam trains give excellent views of the lake and the surrounding scenery.

We're back in 2003 again this week for our #ThrowbackThursday Here's a picture of 'Maid Marian' and visiting Quarry Hunslet 'Irish Mail' running round their train at our Bala terminus.

Here's a photo of one of our St. David's Day trains leaving our Bala station yesterday afternoon. Our next trains will be running in April when our main season commences.

For #ThrowbackThursday this week we’re going back over forty years to the summer of 1984 with a photo of both Kerr Stuart Wren class locomotive No. 3114 and quarry Hunslet ‘Maid Marian’. ‘Maid Marian’ is still on our line whilst the Wren now lives at the Vale of Rheidol Railway in Aberystwyth.

Quarry Hunslet 'Holy War' has had her fire lit this morning preparing for the days work ahead. Here's a view inside her cab for you.

It's #ThrowbackThursday again and here is a picture of 'Helen Kathryn' in the workshop at Llanuwchllyn back in the 1970's. Since leaving Bala she has resided at the Llanberis Lake Railway, the South Tynedale Railway, Threlkeld Quarry & Mining Museum and is now at the Lancashire Mining Museum.

It’s Thursday again and here’s a picture of ‘Holy War’ looking rather grey back in 1988. ‘Holy War’ was the last steam locomotive to work in a Welsh slate quarry finishing at Dinorwic in November 1967. #ThrowbackThursday

It’s already Thursday again and here’s another picture from the Bala Lake Railway photo archive showing Kerr Stuart Wren class locomotive No. 3114 which resided at the railway back in the 1980’s. She now lives at the Vale of Rheidol Railway in Aberystwyth. #ThrowbackThursday

Here are a couple of photos of some garden railway models based on the Bala Lake Railway. The model of 'Alice' is a live steam locomotive which regularly runs in the owners garden. Find out more about this popular hobby at 16mm.org.uk

Here's a shot taken from our station webcam just a few minutes ago showing a Santa Special train arriving into Llanuwchllyn station. Today is the last day that we will be operating trains this year. We'll be back open again over the February half-term holiday next year.

It's Throwback Thursday and we're back in 1987 again. Here's 'Maid Marian' arriving into our main station at Llanuwchllyn. #tbt #ThrowbackThursday

With many people affected by the weather last Saturday and disappointed that they couldn’t get to meet Santa, we have added an extra day this Saturday 14th December. We do have some spare seats available. Details and booking are available on our website at bala-lake-railway.co.uk/santa-specia...

We’ve just published our 2025 timetable along with the list of planned special events on our website. Check them out by following these links: bala-lake-railway.co.uk/timetable/ bala-lake-railway.co.uk/events/

Service update – We will be running all of our Santa Special trains today (Sunday 8th December). We look forward to welcoming everyone who has booked and can make it safely to the railway.

Despite the challenging weather today it has been lovely to see so many people come and visit Santa. Thank you to all our staff and volunteers who have worked so hard to help make people's Christmas. All of our 'Santa Special' trains should be running as planned tomorrow.

Thank you for your patience. We have been grappling with some difficult issues this morning. We are set to run trains this afternoon from 1:30pm. If you do not feel safe getting to Llanuwchllyn, we will be offering refunds. We look forward to seeing those who are able to make it.

In light of updated reports regarding Storm Darragh we have made the tough decision to cancel trains tomorrow (Saturday 7th) up to and including the 12:30 departure. We will be reviewing the position regarding later trains in the morning and will provide a further update no later than 11:00am.

It's Throwback Thursday again. Here's a picture taken at our Bala terminus station back in 1987 with locomotive 'Maid Marian' about to depart back to Llanuwchllyn.

Here's a picture of 'Alice' all cleaned, prepared and ready for the day ahead taken last September at our Llanuwchllyn headquarters.

It's 'Cyber Monday' today so here's a picture of the most technologically advanced locomotive (Murphy) here at the Bala Lake Railway

It’s Thanksgiving Day in America today. It’s also our first Throwback Thursday post here on Bluesky as we’re not running trains at the moment. Here we have some images of locomotives that aren’t with us anymore. #tbt

There's not much of a transport museum ecosystem here yet, so we thought we'd create a Starter Pack and add to it as places come on board. Explore the past through a ride back in time... go.bsky.app/MHhUhRw If you're a transport museum or heritage railway and you're not on the list, let us know!

All of our 2024 Santa Special trains are now fully booked. Watch out for our new timetable, listing our 2025 special events, which will be coming soon.

Don’t forget to share the fact we are here with your networks, the more that read about us it all helps get more visitors to our wonderful railway and reach new volunteers. Thank you all new friends!

We've just updated our Bluesky handle to prove that this really is the Bala Lake Railway! Here's a super picture by Joey Evans from our 2024 Gala to celebrate this (or maybe just for fun)

A dedicated team were rather busy over the last week or so relaying another section of our line. Here are some pictures of the work underway and the freezing conditions they had to endure!
