And by next week the new GOP majority in the MN house will be taking every advantage of this tragedy.

I'm still waiting to see one of those mythical TRO's that aren't appealable. That rule doesn't seem to hold up when the Trump administration is the defendant.

It is amazing how deeply the DOJ has internalized Trump's personal legal tactics.

Why am I reminded by that crucial scene in “Sophie’s Choice”?

Post-accident photos show the slats were extended meaning at least Flaps 1 were being used.

In a low altitude event, it is generally best to maintain the configuration until the immediate danger has passed. There is a risk of moving the flaps in the wrong direction, and the initial stage of gear retraction actually increases the drag due to cycling of the gear doors.

One of two things will happen: 1) Trump will try again to federalize the NG using the proper procedure, or 2) the Supreme Court will ultimately stay this decision.

Nice to hear, but we all know this will ultimately stayed by the Supreme Court.

The WP is now just an extension of the Bezos empire, so my expectations for their editorial standards are fairly low.

My personal observation from the flight deck is the pilots I've flown with who had some notable deficiency were invariably white males. The women and pilots of color have always been sharp. Make of that what you will.
comment in response to

One distressing item which I often see in "water cooler" talk about aviation accidents is the degree some people will emphasize the pilot involved was neither white nor male when it really had no bearing on the accident.
You never hear "The white male pilot made this critical error."

Over the years, I have developed media consumption habits which include a healthy (and sometimes obsessive) avoidance of commercials. When I see commentary like this, it just reminds me why.

I presume once Trump has appointed tens of thousands of political hacks throughout the Administration, the Republican Congress will enact legislation to lock in those appointments for life.

Until judges start throwing Trump officials in jail, their "dislike" isn't going to count for much.

Trump and his rich backers have their own planes, personnel, and security. They generally avoid large commercial airports. They get special handling from departure to destination. As long as basic enroute ATC service are available, they will be fine.
They simply don't care about the rest of us.

Silly goose..... You are assuming the current conservatives Justices work from facts and bedrock principles to arrive at answers rather than figuring out the answer *first* and then determining which "facts" and "principles" get them to that answer.

Selling the plane and using the money to cut the deficit, fund Medicaid, or provide help to veterans would be a true gift to the US.
An aircraft which will cost $1B to convert to a legitimate "Air Force One" and then be given to the Trump Presidential Library latter is a bribe.
Hope that helps.

It should bother us all. Framing the problem as people being "unpatriotic" because they are unwilling to make sacrifices which provide cover for poor decisions by our elected leaders is not what one expects to hear in a healthy democracy.
comment in response to

Presidential transport aircraft are equipped and certified under a fairly extensive set of regulations which go far, far beyond what a normal commercial aircraft is subject to. It would probably take the rest of Trump's term to convert this "gift" into a proper Air Force One.
comment in response to

I used to work with a guy who oversaw the flight testing and certification of the current Air Force One. There is no way in hell this “gift” complies with the standards for a Presidential transport aircraft.

More precisely, we have a VIP problem in DC. Many flights are being conducted simply for the convenience of certain government officials who dislike road traffic while also trying to avoid annoying lesser (but still rich and influential) mortals who don't like the noise of low-flying helicopters.

This will be appealed, of course. And appealed again. And then ignored based on some new objections which needs to be ruled on, and then appealed, and then appealed again.

I can't get to the "useful" part, because I can't get past the "social, economic, and environmental concerns". Slavery was "useful" to those who owned slaves. It was still a shameful practice.
The entire edifice of LLM's has been constructed on a highly unethical foundation.

This is a form of "justice" well-honed by the Nazis.
If a German official was murdered in a small town or village with suspect loyalty, the Gestapo would round up a large group of people from that village, march them out into the neighboring fields, and execute them.
Why am I not surprised?
