Dismay as cross-border library caught in US-Canada feud: ‘We just want to stay open’

Big numbers like this lead to local quotas and the desire to fill them which leads to haste and abuse and lawlessness and terror. www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/...

“They aren’t seeking to kill DEI because it’s unfair. They’re seeking to kill it because it works… and because they’re scared to death they’ll lose positions they were never qualified to have in the first place.” - Anita J. Ponder www.linkedin.com/posts/anita-...

Autism didn’t make them do it. Mental illness didn’t, either. This personal piece from The Big Picture cuts through the excuses and names the real issue: some people are just hateful, and we need to stop giving them cover.

Get involved locally and change your part of the world for the better.

"If the admittedly mistaken word of someone somewhere in the vast government bureaucracy is enough to pluck a man from Maryland and deliver him to a foreign prison in mere days—what is there to protect lawful immigrants, American citizens, or anyone?"

I still can’t figure out when “we can deport you” turned into “we can put you in a hell hole prison in a third country, indefinitely, with no legal recourse.”

Happy National Library Week! If you don't have a library card, go get one. If you have one, use it! Public goods thrive when everybody uses them. That's why they push kids to charter, home, and private schools, why they sow doubt and fear of libraries and our collections. Use it or lose it!

Who benefits from an economic crisis? Trump does. He declares an economic emergency—then manufactures one—which allows him to expand his power. Under the National Emergencies Act (NEA), the president can unlock more than 120 special statutory powers. No wonder he was just out golfing—crisis pays.

Video shows activists unveiling a massive banner with the names of Palestinians killed in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 2023, during a protest in Washington DC.

Thinking of the grieving mothers in Palestine tonight. End the Holocaust in Gaza. Arrest Bibi for war crimes. End arms to Isreal. 😢

"Life in Gaza has never been easy, but we love it, and we can’t love any other home." Ruwaida Amer talks about wrestling with the terror of constant Israeli bombardment and wondering what comes next ⤵️

For many children, flying can be scary. One Massachusetts-based program is helping to ease that fear.

🚨 Director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture has been placed on indefinite leave. The reason for his leave is unclear, but Trump's EO targeted the Smithsonian for promoting “race-centered ideology.” @blackenterprise.bsky.social www.blackenterprise.com/director-nat...

There's a lot going on, God knows, but don't miss that the President of the United States is using the full force of the Federal government, as well as tax dollars, to punish a state because its Governor... refused to do as he instructed. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/02/u...

bsky.app/profile/samm... PLEASE SHARE THIS! They are 100% correct. And if we fall for it - it’s arrests, injuries, and a perfect excuse for martial law. Please share.

"My message to the rest of the Democratic Party is if you are not willing to meet that bar, then step aside for somebody who will. Because we're at a moment right now where we do need people who are willing to fight, willing to show some spine, willing to break through in this media environment."

💯 they could end ALL of this at any time. Instead they are paving the way for him to finally lock in the dictatorship he’s been dreaming about. Few of them will make it out unscathed.

It is so clear they want us to suffer.

Welcome to Idiocracy.

God bless the librarians who tape little numbers on the spines of series books so you can know what order the books go in. stars in their heavenly crown, truly.

The record for the longest US Congressional speech is no longer a filibuster against the Civil Rights Act of 1957 by segregationist Sen. Strom Thurmond. It's now a speech against Trump's authoritarianism, corruption and demagoguery by Sen. Cory Booker. 24 hours and 19 minutes - and still going.

JUST IN: The staff of the Institute of Museum and Library Services was placed on administrative leave this morning, following a meeting between IMLS leadership and DOGE staff.

remember what i said about RFK Jr. being a eugenicist first and foremost? www.marketwatch.com/story/agency...

This piece from @jvl.bsky.social is one of the most important insightful I have read since January 20th 2025.

US letter demanding compliance with anti-diversity policy is 'an attempt at a moral takeover of French companies'

The Smithsonian Institution, a vast complex of research centers, museums and galleries, is the latest culture target of President Trump's executive orders.

Do not obey in advance.

It's critical for everyone to remember what an Executive Order is. It is the President communicating orders to members of the executive branch. Policies to pursue, actions to take, etc. They are not laws. They are not close to being laws. They are formalized memos to employees. That's all.
