A high profile journalist riding into space with a billionaire who is focused on limiting free press at his own newspaper is definitely a choice.

Hi! Got to talk to showrunner of the first daytime soap to centering a Black family “Beyond the Gates,” Michele Van Jean and star Tamara Tunie about their soap legacies and what’s hopefully soap’s future. All of my childhood reading of Soap Opera Weekly paid off. open.spotify.com/episode/5HIx...

A new $15 million jazz fellowship is granting 50 artists over the age of 62 a $100,000 grant, professional support and performance opportunities

Glad to have you there to watch me zone out for 12 minutes as I read an essay about the Godfather as a moral cheat code.

Respect to the enduring legacy of SNL, but this sure is a whole lotta preamble for what’s essentially a corporate gala.

Wrote this week’s Code Switch newsletter about how our digital world is being erased. But we can still rely on Mapquest. www.npr.org/2025/02/14/g...

This is so real. Thank goodness my editor has a Tetris brain that can help me lock in all the pieces.

Tim Tooten was THE man for education reporting in Baltimore. If anything happened at your school, he was there. And he’ll be sorely missed.

The NFL getting rid of their “End Racism” signage this week and then using Jesse Jackson’s “I Am Somebody” poem in an NFL youth ad in the same breath is so smarmy.

I have questions. What happens if you circumnavigate the bald dude with the neck bandaid? What happens if you use another door? What happens if you get arrested? CAN you get arrested? If so, why CAN’T you get arrested? What are plans B, C and D?

The largest college sports governing body in the U.S. has rescinded its former guidance for trans student-athletes, which had been in place since 2010, to ban trans girls from girls' sports. NCAA announced the policy while praising Trump's executive order to ban trans girls from school sports

we must move beyond dreaming up new ways to be decipherable to enemies of our hearts and minds.

I don’t know how to explain it, but the American remake of “Speak No Evil” feels completely disingenuous when we’re currently living through the Danish version of “Speak No Evil.”

All of Schoolhouse Rock is on Disney+, if you need them. The most problematic is the explanation of westward expansion as “Elbow Room.” But the rest are pretty good refreshers for what the US is meant to stand for. The irony that they’re largely accessible thru a giant corporation isn’t lost on me

Totally forgot to share this. But I’m the top of this week’s This American Life! I talk with Ira about my yearly birthday tradition that isn’t on my birthday. Take a listen. www.thisamericanlife.org/853/groundho...

i wrote something about This Place for @404media.co. please read it, and then log off. 💗

This was such an incredible list to contribute to. Especially if it gets more people to watch “Cane River.”

Glad to be of service!!

Had the incredible honor of talking with THE Rhiannon Giddens about my current journey learning how to play the banjo. Which is like telling Picasso that I’m learning to paint. But when you’re trying to reconcile the past, present & future of the banjo, you’ve gotta go to the GOAT. 🪕

A great listen as Parker takes up what is--imo at least--the quintessential American instrument, an instrument that shows up in and illustrates most every beautiful and ugly wrinkle in our history.

This entire week is why Pansy kept crashing out in Hard Truths.

Coconut Records, Sleigh Bells AND Rilo Kiley are coming back in 2025? What do they know that we don’t?

Hi! The world is an overwhelming mess, so I took up the banjo. Made some friends along the way. And realized too late why my C chord sounds so bad. Take a listen! open.spotify.com/episode/7ekQ...

That’s not gonna stop random non-black people from thinking that I work there when I’m minding my business.

I’m gonna ask a question that my godsister likes to ask when she checks in on folks: how’s your heart?

It may be without distribution but if you live in NYC, No Other Land will be playing at Film Forum starting January 31st. Make the time.

Between the Ravens loss yesterday and Anthony Santander going to Toronto, I truly can’t cope.

I’ve spent my day off on my couch, eating brisket, and teaching myself “In Heaven” from Eraserhead on the banjo. I hope y’all are taking care of yourselves today.

That was a Nazi salute. Like, a real life compulsory Dr. Strangelove Nazi salute. We’re all gonna have to process that, and decide if that’s what we’d like to engage with for the next 4 years. We had a door no. 2. and that was closed. But maybe think about reconfiguring a door no. 3.

“Serling was following a path laid down by writers and artists in a lot of different cultures who had more to lose than their income—including ones who were, at that very moment, being persecuted by dictators.” — I wrote about Rod Serling today. No reason. www.rogerebert.com/features/the...

I’m suppose to remember something I saw in April of 2022? I’m not even the same person I was in 2022. I couldn’t even tell you my login passwords from 2022. I’ve had 3 different jobs since the first season ended. I’m going in with 0 memory of 95% of the show. Much like an outie.

Mind you, this man isn’t president until TOMORROW. This doesn’t bode well. I assume free speech will continue to be threatened as a negotiation tactic going forward. But… you know… the dances are back.

It ended just as David Lynch was showing how to repair his pants. 😞
