Several years ago, I was crouched down, working in my garden, and suddenly came face to face with a possum. We were both startled. I found myself a few inches from a rat-like-looking snout so I jumped up and yelled. The poor possum ran off in a panic. I always felt bad about scaring it like that.

After that, maybe Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey - Maturin series. Not as funny, but very very dense and great to read.

I know. Sometimes, you read a novel you loved when you were a kid and you are appalled by some of the things you find. On the other hand, though, sometimes you find insights that you totally missed because you weren't adult enough to see them.

This. My partner and I were huge fans; we really felt it when he was gone.
