Finally felt I had to cancel my WaPo subscription. Apologies to the members of the news team, who I very much appreciate.

my colleague @miasato.bsky.social reported on Luigi Mangione's hearing yesteday, with spectacular courtroom sketches from @mollycrabapple.bsky.social www.theverge.com/law/617946/l...

This means you. 🫵

Just had 30 boxes of books picked up by @housingworksnyc.bsky.social -- we still have lots of stuff to go through in our basement, but now we have more room to do it!

Going through the hundreds of books in our basement, and while we're trying to be ruthless about culling them, my pile of "forgot we had this, gotta read it!" is growing...

One of which is mine. Just saying....

This made me smile today.

Found this in an old book we once picked up in a used bookstore. So what do you think? Should I see if I have any aptitude?

My local deli is adding an extra charge for egg sandwiches -- but apparently, it only applies to Time Lords.

Put this together in case it might prove helpful. www.theverge.com/how-to/60620...

Going through our backlog of books, came across this title and just had to share it.

It's a measure of how distracted I was the spring of 2024 (due to the death of one family member and illness of another) that the fact that I had a story published in @kaleidotrope.bsky.social totally passed me by. So nearly a year later, here it is. kaleidotrope.net/archives-2/s...

Just in case you have babies or kids -- I just enjoy getting the Verge folks to talk about the tech they actually use.... www.theverge.com/favorites/24...

So @maryrobinettekowal.com has been doing a book club for her Lady Astronaut series. Last night, she hosted an AMA. Someone asked for recommendations for other SFF books with Jewish characters. And I realized it’s been a while since I shared my list. So here goes:

These are the people who did it the "right" way. The "legal" way. But even that isn't enough. This breaks my heart. Trump Administration Cancels Flights for Refugees Already Approved for Travel www.nytimes.com/2025/01/22/u...

Nearly 3 years after being acquired by Vox Media, PS (formerly POPSUGAR) is excited to announce its bid to join the Vox Media Union. Following devastating layoffs, our prospective members are more motivated than ever to fight for an equitable, united workplace. Please share to show your support!

I really need to not rewatch obscure TV shows from the late '80s that I liked then. The disappointment is too great.

Rereading Terry Pratchett novels is enormously comforting. Just saying.

Sorry. I just couldn't resist passing this on. I don't know why. www.theverge.com/2025/1/18/24...

Things are still up in the air with TikTok, and there are people with a lot of content there. So just in case (and anyway, you should be backing up whatever happens, right?), here's a how-to on saving your videos. www.theverge.com/24343890/tik...

Was pleased to see this article about @nnedi.bsky.social in the NYT. She's a fascinating writer and person. I'm looking forward to reading her new book. Writing Fantasy Came Naturally. Reality Was Far More Daunting. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/12/b...

Between-the-eyes writing like this is one of the reasons I want to be @lopatto.bsky.social in my next life.

Back in 2011, I sold a story named "Button Up Your Overcoat" to an anthology titled Broken Time Blues: Fantastic Tales in the Roaring ‘20s. I couldn't include verses from that song because of possible copyright problems. Today I discovered the song is now out of copyright. Oh, well.

I ran out of one type of candle and had to start a different box of smaller candles, so my final night menorah is a little... uneven.

In the 1950s and early 60s, when an SF author was short on cash, they often resorted to speedily writing bad space operas or crappy sex books, usually under a pseudonym. The most surprising thing about this hilariously cliched novel is that it was written under the author's real name.

Greetings to all my friends, family, colleagues, and strangers, no matter what you do and do not celebrate. Have a wonderful whatever.

A short animation called Happiness with a message that's not new, but wonderfully presented. Make sure to pause occasionally to read the ads, including one for "Trump, the Musical." Thanks to Adam-Troy Castro (www.patreon.com/posts/116766...) for the rec. www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9dZ...

I've always admired Francis Perkins, who was secretary of labor under FDR. She was largely responsible for pushing him to install social security, mandate unemployment insurance, and halt child labor, among others. She deserves recognition. heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/december-1...

I am just old enough to remember standing on a long line of adults holding my mother's hand and being watched carefully as I drank a sweet syrup that contained the polio vaccine from a tiny cup. When it became available, parents were desperate to immunize their children against that disease.

I'm changing trains, and a young man yells at a subway worker: "You lookin' at me?" "Why, you lookin' at me?" the worker yells back. "No, I asked first, you lookin' at me?" I felt like I was watching a 1950s TV play.
