"I once was so many things: June street corners and cigarettes and bare feet in creek water." We published this gorgeous, aching micro memoir by @dinalrelles.bsky.social‬ in our Tenth Anniversary postcards issue a few years ago & we think you should revisit it today! buff.ly/AjWQ9CZ

"In a typical day in Europe, you wake up, eat lunch, go to a museum, and then hit the town. Nobody is stressed about their job. That’s the benefit of a strong welfare state. Everyone is young and has lots of free time."

Would you like to read the most harrowing, angry story I ever wrote? (and possibly will ever write) Yes? Okay, well... You were warned. @nightmare-magazine.com

Trilled to announce I have a collection of stories coming out next year with @cowboyjamboree.bsky.social called Coyote Girl. Thank you @vanwinkle.bsky.social! 🙏 🎉

2021: There is no AI, you're doing your own laundry. 2023: CEOs are saying that AI is coming and will do your laundry. 2025: There is AI. You're still doing your own laundry. 2027: You're doing the AI's laundry.

I am so pleased and in the deepest awe that I somehow have a poem in @pleiadesmag.bsky.social!

Sci-fi writers got a lot right, but no dystopian novel ever predicted the sheer douchiness of modern times because these levels of douchebagetry were unimaginable just a few decades ago, even to our most outlandish dreamers. What a douchey new world we have wrought. Look upon my 👌 and despair!

AI is going to make 25% of things amazingly better and ruin the other 75% completely, eliminate jobs, and shift power further toward corporate overlords looking to cut costs and corners, all while the wrecking the environment and poking at the soft underbelly of human extinction. What. A. Deal.

“The only thing hanging in the closet now is the suit. Waiting for me. Like a Wall Street Grim Reaper.” This matter-of-fact heartbreaker by @mikemwilson.bsky.social is going to stay with me. What a perfect short story.

Lack of shame has been weaponized to a previously unthought of level. Feeling no remorse or empathy and refusing to back down on your claims no matter how erroneous or ridiculous is categorically “badass” to an embarrassingly large amount of the populace.

2025 has been a hard year so far for Apex. In the interest of transparency, we want to share what happened, the current state of things, and how you can help. We're determined to keep publishing great stories for many years to come, and your support is what will make that possible. 🖤👽

The singular Mike McLelland is bringing some (spiritual) blond ambition to Writer’s Style Guide today! charlesjensen.substack.com/p/writers-st...

“I thought I’d be all you’d need, but your heart was in the dark and mine was in the weeds. I’m sure the dreamer who invented the trapeze, fell in love with someone who grew to resent the goddamn thing.”

10% of the population seems completely insane on every issue. There is a lot of overlap with people who believe 5G is mind control, lizard people rule Europe, and the earth is flat, but there are a lot of people who seem mostly normal until you realize they think they are the digital messiah.

I think a lot of these places advertising “hearth-cooked” bread don’t even have a real hearth. A hearth isn’t just any old stove, man. The word “hearth” used to mean something! Every time you serve this imitation hearth-bread a medieval peasant dies! You should be ashamed of yourselves Arby’s.

Hello lovely people! I’ve not been writing much this year (it’s been a strange and difficult one so far), so I’m delighted to have a piece of flash fiction up at the wonderful Flash Boulevard! Many thanks, @francinewitte.bsky.social flashboulevard.wordpress.com/2025/05/31/c...

“At the docks, after you were gone, I watched a fisherman gut a small gator gar with a serrated sandwich knife.” Catherine Niu’s “Swamp” is featured in ‪@cincinnatireview.bsky.social‬ & our #APAHeritageMonth reading list: www.cincinnatireview.com/micro/micro-...

Doctors at the CDC say children should receive Covid vaccines. A disgraced ex-environmental lawyer who spent 20 years abusing heroin says they shouldn't. For busy parents, it can be hard to know who to trust.

I think a very reasonable law is that if someone says they play music or make art, and some knob replies “Why would you want to do that when AI can do it?” or “Say goodbye to that when AI takes it over,” we should throw the knob in the ocean and toss metal life preservers at him until he drowns.
