The 1st Europeans here described the SF Bay as a solid sheet of black- rafts of otters. Then they killed them all, for their pelts. Capitalism + Imperialism = devastation. This female at Elkhorn is banging a clam on rock, to open it. Cute as a button they are. #marinelife, #seaotter,

Meet Marty, the zombie HS. I track pelicans. In 10 yrs of surveys I have come to know other individuals, she tops the list. She pups in the same harbor every April. Probably got a rockfish spine through the roof of her mouth, not a big deal, they hunt w/ whiskers. harbor seal, #marinelife

Meet Morris, only known Northern gannet in the Pacific, 2 CA brown pelicans w/red pouch establish place- S.F. Bay. Ice free NW passage. Morris been here 10+ yrs. He hangs with cormies. He be famous. I have seen him ~75x. He a character, always squabbling w/ cormies. #birds, pelicans #gannet

It’s breeding season. Brown pelicans in Northern California, gular pouches are red, irises turning blue. I am starting to see the first black necks of the season. Most birds have moved south. Hundreds are already on nests in the Channel Islands. #birds, brown pelican, CA brown pelican

Black oystercatcher with aberrant plumage. Appears to be a brown (Konter 2015). No eumelainin, but making phaeomelanin. Note toenails, normal birds added as reference. But I am not an expert on this species. And Konter says most are mis-identified. Seen SMC, CA, last week. #birds
