New from 404 Media: Flock, the company that makes automatic license plate reading cameras for communities and has sprang up around the US, sent a cease and desist to an open source developer who has been mapping Flock's spread. DeFlock is fighting back www.404media.co/flock-threat...

Anyone know of a nation state that isn’t currently gutting higher ed?

all fun and games til he wages war on spherical ideology

“Laws intended to strip queer and trans people of their rights as citizens also result in cis/hetero women being stripped of their rights, exhibit no.23875”

With the corporate world casting off any pretense of commitment to ethical use of technology, with authoritarian governments the world over flaunting the abuse of AI to carry out unthinkable and illegal agendas, the academy must support this crucial work.

DOGE's new AI, built to scan federal workers' emails to see if they get to keep their jobs, is the latest in a number of AI schemes from Musk. We might scoff at how dumb these ideas are, but the truth is, they're not even supposed to work. They're built to eliminate accountability.

We, the queer community, do not have to roll over and accept this. This is a call to arms.

At risk of repeating myself: the authoritarian use of technology relies on both a complete disregard for how the technology works and the use of said technology as justificatory cover for inept and illegal human decision-making.

We are reaching multiple climate tipping points. This is what it looks like. Note that we've already reached 560 ppm CO₂ equivalent (total greenhouse gas forcing of about +4 W/m² above 1750).

Facts is hard.

I could start a bluesky acct whose entire purpose was to post "oh look, it's phrenology o'clock" when someone uses machine learning to determine <gender/personality/criminality/sexuality/whatever> and it would be disturbingly prolific.

We wrote a paper about why such practices are not only pseudoscientific and unethical, but should also pay off financially on a par with consulting tarot cards: www.cell.com/patterns/ful...

Cool app idea: EGGTRACKER Crowdsources data on which grocery store in your state has eggs in stock Electrodes wired directly into the user’s brain detect subterfuge

Writing a new paper: false promises and false premises of fair machine learning.

“The stock market is not gossip,” my guy, my absolute dude, what do you think the stock market is

I maintain that the output of language models only comes across as semantic if you cannot read; otherwise it presents as statistically well-structured word salad.

This is what happened to a tenured professor at Emory when she asked police to stop brutalizing a student

This is obscene.

I know there are a lot more important things happening in the world right now than the Great Pennsylvania Egg Heist but

Does anyone have access to a copy of Otto Neurath’s “Anti-Spengler” in the original German?

I’m thrilled to share new work arguing that the research community should stop treating AGI as a North-Star goal! Debates about AGI miss the forest for the trees. 🧵

Since yesterday, this site seems to have been....modified

Incredibly, in addition to discontinuing the “–AI” prompt, google search has removed the shortcut to searching for the terms you have actually entered into the search bar. You can now only access via google an ML generated summary of an ML system’s best guess at what you might have meant to search.
