We invite you to the CELLO Conference 2025, Sept 16–18 in Hamburg, Germany. Our motto “Climate Exploration in Lively Liaison with the Ocean,” honors that nearly 50 years ago, under Klaus Hasselmann, the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology recognized the ocean’s crucial role in the climate system.

Because of a snow, @baylorfk.bsky.social’s Mines Climate Seminar has been rescheduled for MONDAY at 10 am in Hill Hall 202. Register for the Zoom stream here: mines.zoom.us/webinar/regi...

Postdoc opportunity with Sophie Nowicki and me on "Earth System Modeling of Regional Sea Level Rise and Risk"

OK--what's a budget? for money? mass? energy? salinity? 🌊 I talk it through with Hemingway and a banker... youtu.be/4EAufDOzJeE

In the wake of a grim week, @radatmines.bsky.social, @siegfried.bsky.social, and I are excited to launch the Mines Climate Seminar Series! We'll have an incredible lineup of speakers, starting next week with @drandreadutton.bsky.social , followed by @baylorfk.bsky.social and Richard Alley. 🌎✊🏼

OK, as we near the end of what is likely to be my only year-long sabbatical*, I wanted to share some things I've learned and will apply in the coming year of teaching and being. (Thread) *Check my privilege ✅

Also, for climate students and other newbies, @skepticalscience.bsky.social puts out skepticalscience.com which is a great place to begin to learn the contours of the field and spot disinformation.

Katherine, I'm on the lookout. Also, if anyone tries to imitate me, you can tell they are doing so because they'll post low-quality, AI scripted, deep faked voice-over cartoons about climate change... Oh wait, that's me...

Hi new followers! Here's an early attempt by me (plus lots of AI) at figuring out how to distill a complicated paper (🌊) into an easy to digest video... I'd love to make this easy. Suggestions welcome! youtu.be/B19YK80Oj_U?...

In a new interdisciplinary Nature Climate Change Perspective paper, led by me, @lisgilmore and Rachael Shwom, we offer a critical perspective on #climate and social “tipping points.” 🎁: rdcu.be/d2gBC 🧵

Ketan points out a nice blog post by @andrewdessler.com that clarifies much to do with net zero, commitment, and concentration-forced vs. emissions-forced models.

Come do a PhD with Channing Prend and myself! The project will use seal data and models to understand Antarctic Slope Current dynamics. Based in Edinburgh, UK, but with opportunities for time in Australia also. e4-dtp.ed.ac.uk/e5-dtp/super... 🌊

📆 ON THIS DAY in 2022, Miniboat Inspiration washed ashore in Christchurch, United Kingdom after 245 days at sea! Built by @centralfallsschooldistrict students with @universityofri #URIGSO and @miniboats, #MBInspiration traveled almost 15,000 kilometers across the Atlantic Ocean 🌊

🚨New study alert! Can #greensky define ‘information subsidy’? Would you recognize ‘solutions denial’? Here’s a thread on the networks opposing offshore wind in the Northeast USA, tracing how many of the discourses used against wind come from fossil fuels.. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Fossil fuels are the biggest source of CO2 emissions in most countries, but there are a few exceptions

🚨Exciting Postdoctoral Opportunities in Oceanography 🌊 at CNRM Climate Center, Toulouse 🚨 We are seeking two highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to join us for 2 two-year positions!

If you haven’t discovered the oceanography feed yet, go have a look! It’s where all the interesting 🧪stuff is happening

🌊 Beware using variance as an index on non-Gaussian distributions! (more to come on this topic soon) A. Sane, B. Fox-Kemper, and D. Ullman. Internal vs forced variability metrics for geophysical flows using information theory. JGR--Oceans, 129(5):e2023JC020101, May 2024. dx.doi.org/10.1029/2023...

DallE seems to think our important climate choices are between spelling and misspelling.
