After a November election that felt like the end of the world, after months of attacks on values and institutions we hold dear, after a Democratic official and her husband were murdered Saturday morning, we needed to see that we weren’t the only ones heartbroken, freaked out and super pissed off:

Republicans: Let’s make life worse for everyone except billionaires. Also Republicans: Why is the birth rate declining? Why wouldn’t anyone want to bring children into this world we’re creating?

W.E.B. Du Bois on Robert E. Lee: “Either he knew what slavery meant when he helped maim and murder thousands in its defense, or he did not. If he did not he was a fool. If he did, Robert Lee was a traitor and a rebel–not indeed to his country, but to humanity and humanity’s God.”

Trump's superpower is getting people to stick their necks out for him only to get humiliated and yet there are always more people thinking "This won't happen to me. I'm built different" and it always does.

America is now characterized by dangerous stupidity. We’ve taken people who think their ignorance is more valid than the knowledge of experts and put them in charge of everything important. Healthcare, trade, education, defense, national security, etc. All in the hands of the dangerously stupid.

The people writing the finale of America have a sense of humor because Trump used to tell this story of “The Snake” during his 2016 campaign and it describes exactly what he’s doing to Tim Apple quite perfectly.

my column/essay this week is on the administration's war on the future, what that means, and the obligation anti-trump americans have to articulate a robust vision of an egalitarian future in response. read/share/etc. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/21/o...

“A four-panel comic” 1/3

good vibes only

"On Tyranny" is a #1 NYT bestseller again. I wish the moment were different. But I’m glad the book is useful. And grateful for all the kind words about putting the 20 lessons to work. snyder.substack.com/p/twenty-les...

Don’t worry the tariff price hikes are temporary. They will be over as soon as hundreds of thousands businesses spend hundreds of billions to build factories in the US, hire workers, train them and all the while hope Trump doesn’t change his mind on tariffs thus wasting their investment. Easy peasy

This guy outside the Capitol seems to really be enjoying his weekend. What a vibe.

Americans shopping on Temu are finding out that other countries will pay the tariffs was just as true as Mexico will build the wall.

Me and my dog all day

When your only principles are loyalty to your king and resentment of people who don’t look like you then your position on policy issues will be as incoherent as an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants.

You have your phone plugged in all night The other end of the cable isn't plugged into the wall

The lesson of history is that tyrants cannot be appeased.  Appeasement only feeds their insatiable hunger for power. Tyrants prey on people who feel unsafe and vulnerable.  But without mass submission, a tyrant is powerless.

How can you have imposter syndrome when you see who’s running the country? On my worst day, I couldn’t tank the economy this badly if I tried.

At this rate MAGA will only be able to afford to rent the libs.
