A few novels have come quite close, but Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston and The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro are the only two I've read so far that I would call perfect, absolutely *flawless* masterpieces. Which novels do you feel this way about?

I've become a very picky reader of fiction in middle age, but just throw in some pear symbolism and I'll forgive any flaws in your novel and gush: AHHH!! YES!! FINALLY, SOME FINE FUCKIN' LITERATURE!! (Half kidding-- it wasn't just the pears I liked. Also, we've been spoiled for great novels lately)

Do you say it like colluhflower or collyflower? When I was growing up, everyone I knew said it colluhflower, but now I hear some people say collyflower and it sounds funny to my ear. Is it a regional difference from somewhere? (I am in the Great Plains of the USA)

My StoryGraph handle is bean_season. Find me on there and I'll follow you back. Always fun to see what people are reading. 💚

“I could’ve written about any number of the important rule-of-law and ethics questions arising out of the Adams/Bove affair. But the *real* issue to which I’ll dedicate my time is that Danielle Sassoon invoked her Scalia clerkship in her letter to the Attorney General.” reason.com/volokh/2025/...

Could we please not call other human beings maggots? Using dehumanizing language to denigrate other people doesn't fight fascism, it serves it. Besides, maggots play an important role in our ecosystem-- no need for them to be catching strays in all this.

So glad my boss scheduled me a random day off today (I'm not great at requesting and using my vacation time, so she does this for me sometimes). Walking 2.4 miles in this snow from work yesterday was okay, but I didn't want to do it twice again today. But I still went on a walk for fun this am

I know we're supposed to call during business hours and talk to a person, but I just got done leaving my nightly voicemails to my MoCs for the day and I'm still proud of myself. The relief of getting this task done feels good every time. I'm guessing the Venn diagram of people

David Hockney (b 1937, England) No 346 May 22, 2020 iPad drawing From The Arrival of Spring, Normandy, 2020 series I just like how green and wet it is. I love the idea of viriditas, especially lately. A green, wet sanctuary of love, joy, and freedom inside, indestructable.

UPDATE: Judge Engelmayer ordered any such official who was granted access to the systems since Jan. 20 to “destroy any and all copies of material downloaded from the Treasury Department’s records and systems.” He also restricted the government from granting access to these categories of officials.

I say "I know" to my cats all the time. But I don't. I don't fucking know at all.

Resisting the urge to jump in to scold strangers for squabbling and in-fighting. I keep wanting to be like "Can we focus?!" But I know I shouldn't be online so much, either. What do you think? Ignore or engage? What's the best way to help us all stay focused?

Fed employees need to start familiarizing themselves with their states’ recording consent laws. Quick wiki to peruse: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telepho...

They're expected to vote on this tonight- please call your Senators' offices and let them know what you think. How many times did they drill into us as schoolchildren about "three co-equal branches of government" and "Congress has the power of the purse"? 5calls.org/issue/russel...

Philly Whole Foods workers made history last Monday: Their win was only the second time US workers have ever beaten Amazon in a union election But it won't be the last 🧵

This website (there's an app too) makes it easy for people to find their MoCs numbers and even has talking points for issues. I did feel a little better after leaving messages. I know it's more effective to call when we can talk to a person, but it's better than nothing, right?

One of them was that kid from UNL who won the first Vesuvius challenge award for detecting a word from an unopened scroll. 😟 He had seemed so full of promise! Didn't realize he'd dropped out his senior year to become a Thiel Fellow

Quite the indictment of AI products: they are more appealing to people who don't understand how they work and see them as magical The paper concludes: "businesses may benefit from targeting those with lower AI literacy" and "maintaining an aura of magic around AI" ✨ tinyurl.com/ynefd8zk

Ever wonder what snow in the swamp would look like? This is 5 miles into the Louisiana swamps in the Atchafalaya basin... it's unreal... having lived down there for the first 28 years of my life, we never saw anything like this. Smashed records. Curtesy of Garrett Roberts.

He got almost 4 million fewer votes than Biden did in 2020. He *lost* support with low-income voters, but still eked out a win due to his gains with high-income voters. Gotta log off before I see any more posts blaming the most vulnerable demographics for our current woes
