Today is the solstice. Meaning from today, the length of daylight hours gets shorter, yet human activity continues to edge higher until the end of the year. No longer bound by daylight, the psychological mechanism of the year is akin the the psychological mechanism of the day.

I find I have an abiding need to extract text from images (including scans). Still, I want to avoid using third party services for this task whenever possible, because the data is sensitive. Seven years ago I wrote a Python script that was useful at work (FJ). Today I updated it. tinyurl.com/tzocr

It is always a good time to update your passwords. It is never a good time to reuse passwords. But these are turbulent times, and technology is being used to steal more often than not. Moreover, there are specific warnings addressed to your attention: cybernews.com/security/bil...

Today is the solstice. Nominally the longest day of the year. A lot happened today; probably more than should have. Thank god we got through it all; updated passwords in relation to escalating cyber threats, pushed code, learned some things (www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UAv...)

If you watch no other conversation between a mushroom and a bird this year, let it be this one. youtu.be/THfBccihkVQ?...

Consider if you will: The four, maybe five things that constitute E.M.'s personality are actively falling apart in real time: AI is falling apart, electric cars are falling apart, MAGA is falling apart, & rockets to Mars are falling apart. And maybe mass insemination is falling apart. But who knows?

Demi-academic: A college graduate with no particular love for academic work.

She will pay money for it, if she sees value in it. The value that she sees is according to the situation that she is in. According to her hopes and fears. According to her experienced past, according to her anticipated future. www.opensourceshakespeare.org/views/plays/...

It is June 2025, and stealing crypto is still one of the biggest games in town. IMAO, if you are converting tokens to dollars, you are doing it right. If you are converting dollars to tokens, you are doing it wrong. www.forbes.com/sites/zakdof...

Earlier this year I realised that when a company pays minimum wage, they would actually like to pay less, but the law does not allow them to.

Paracites is an interesting metaphor.

As a rule I don't like television but I think I am in love with _Sanctuary Moon_.

Americans need to hear this: Not voting just because your candidate will not win is not the way to live in a democracy. Even if your candidate loses, the amount by which they lose will determine how heavy handed the winner is. Even when your candidate wins, whether by a little or a lot matters!

"It was the biggest scandal of our time. High level bureaucrats were summoned before Congress to answer for what they knew and when they knew it. Infants everywhere were scandalised. Even Hasbro made an official statement. The press dubbed it babygate."

Perhaps even after their initial success, Temu knew that they were vulnerable to tariffs? A case that is even more to the point is TikTok. When they were under threat from Trump, they were advertising like mad. But now that that threat has passed, you don't see TikTok ads very often.

I had the idea to post that when big companies advertise heavily, it is not to attract new customers, but to get ahead of government action. Case in point: AT&T in the early 1980s, and the US Post Office in the early 1990s. Then a Temu ad came on and my daughter asked, "Why are they advertising?"

I am an enigma, wrapped inside a pita, deep fried in canola. #MonteCristoMe

I get that 22 quid a month is cheaper than a personal assistant. Problem is, I am not of the class that would _have_ a personal assistant. I am of the class that thinks up library research projects to justify the unruled note books I am about to buy.

Autistic, not in the sense of schizophrenia or nearsightedness, but in the sense of hipster or weeaboo. The quants who are because they love it, not for what it pays. The scientific physicians who are because they love it. The legal nerds who are because they love it. The rocket scientists...

People who give expert advice, without understanding the fundamentals, remind me of my younger self. And it is completely [ ! ] annoying.

It is settled then: Maths is for Makers.

A major problem is the lack of qualifying questions. Let's build a scientific society based on qualifying questions.

Her: "Do you have any gift ideas for our kid's birthday?" Me: "Coal. And then be like, 'Ya know, the industrial revolution was pretty fly.'"

I told that girl, "I can start right away." She said, "Listen babe, I got something to say. I got no car, and it's breaking my heart. But I've found a driver, and that's a start!"

It's all fun and games until someone invents an AGI.

Management is to business as statistics is to mathematics. Management pays the business bills, just as statistics pays the mathematics bills.

function factorial( number ) { if ( number <= 1 ) return 1; // base case else return number * factorial( number - 1 );} 170! = 7.257415615307994e+306 171! = Infinity :0) It seems JavaScript is faster and more precise than C#, at least when it comes to factorials.

"I will not be doing your job. I need you to bear the cognitive load during crunch time." Maybe I could do your job, but that is not what I need to be doing when the situation heats up. I need _you_, _there_.

After a spate of bad press from single-handedly crashing the US economy, Elon Musk appears to have gone into hiding. Has anyone noticed?

In a "toxic environment" the value of morale is chronically discounted. "I don't really mind if it's over ya head / Because the job of resurrectin' is to wake up the dead." - Kevin Brereton
