I'm not generally an open-letter person, but this is a good one, and I signed.

It would be better to give up all federal money than to give up the soul of the university like this.

So what now? Stick close to home. My focus over the last decade has been to engage where it has the biggest impact. My local community. I gave a TED talk & asked audience members to develop “radical curiosity” about where they live. We still have a lot of control-and power at the local level.
