Consider a programmer looking at code they themselves wrote a year ago, now having to identify and fix a bug. They have to rebuild the mental model of what is going on, which is easier if they have already had a mental model of what is going on.

I've been researching a piece on why the "human in the loop" paradigm is so much nonsense, but this is the gist: if you don't attend to how the system functions when it worked, you won't be able to fix it when it doesn't. When you don't understand how it works, the only "fix" is to redo everything.

🇨🇦 Prime Minister Carney: “I would humbly suggest that I think the Secretary General of NATO is probably more up to speed on the numbers than the President of the United States” BOOM SHAKALAKA 💥

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

It's .........very cosplay so far here at Trump's birthday parade. Those wigs must be so damn hot Let's do this! 🧵

“Summer, she has no limit.” This week was Summer McIntosh in full: three world records, and two of the great swims on top of that, to the point where her coach was fighting back tears. It’s on the table, now: she can be the greatest swimmer of all time. www.thestar.com/sports/amate...

The Danielle Smith Legislative Ledger – Part Two: The Wrecking Ball Keeps Swinging The bills that didn’t make headlines. The ones that rewired Alberta quietly, methodically, and permanently. This isn’t noise. It’s memory. It’s fuel. #ableg 🧵

The final days of the Alberta Legislature’s Spring 2025 session pissed me off. I rolled up my sleeves right after and started a research project. I present to you all an #ableg 🧵: Danielle Smith’s Legislative Wrecking Ball: Part One

“You wouldn’t amputate fundamental parts of who you are the minute you cross a border; to expect others to do so is not only absurd, it’s also unworkable.” My latest for the @mtlgazette.bsky.social In print and online. www.montrealgazette.com/opinion/colu...

My latest — I wrote about Trump pardoning reality stars Todd and Julie Chrisley’s tax and bank fraud convictions after their daughter praised him at the RNC vs. 18-year-old Marcelo Gomes da Silva’s wrongful ICE detainment, and how justice has merely become a presidential transaction. Read here:

Please enjoy this ridiculously cute butterfly, which was about the size of my pinkie fingernail. It's in the butterfly family called metalmarks (Riodinidae). Males, like these, have reduced front legs and perch using only the rear 4 (females can use all 6). Sarota acantus; Costa Rica 🐙🌿 #insects

Happy International Day of the Potato! A Latvian phrase similar to “liar, liar, pants on fire” is the rhyming melis, melis, kartupelis. It means “liar, liar, potato!” Read on for more international idioms (and some rehashed jokes) about potatoes (a thread)…

Pretty dramatic day in Russia: Ukrainian drones have reportedly attacked four Russia air bases, destroying a significant number of strategic bombers and radar planes. (Tu-95s, Tu-22, A-50) Russian milbloggers are furious. One calls it a "black day," another says they need to nuke Kyiv.

Oh boy, little league soccer time! Got both boys in it this year, Big D on the neon yellow team as #9, and Big A as #4 on the blue team.

In one question, Conservatives decried that the government won’t make housing prices go down, and in the very next questions decry that selling prices in Toronto are too low. PICK A LANE, GUYS! #QP cc @mikepmoffatt.bsky.social
