Genuinely incredible piece of reporting here that makes the story completely unimpeachable. They sat in the back of an immigration courtroom and watched the guy pull out his personal phone and post to his racist account DURING the hearing!

REVEALED: we identified the operator of an overtly racist X account, "GlomarResponder," as ICE Assistant Chief Counsel James Rodden, based on an overwhelming number of biographical details matched through publicly available documents, other social media activity, and courtroom observation.

Very happy that a city I both like and am completely terrified of won

Assuming we make it through the next couple of decades, this will be an incredible image for future historians/students of the Trump era

sam’s thread helps clarify something for me, which is the underlying theory behind trump’s action. trump does not see himself as a president in a system of shared authority, he sees himself as sovereign, with unchecked authority over everything.

Just spotted the new Amazon “haul” in Beta and never wanted to launch something into the sun so quickly.

New: Trump officials have paused all external communications at health agencies like CDC, FDA, NIH. No health alerts and the famed MMWRs; no updates to key websites or social media posts. And no indication how long the pause will last. With @rachelroubein.bsky.social + Lena Sun.

I was the EIC of Bitch Media for nearly five years. Few things bother me more than people saying “I wish Bitch still existed” because keeping it alive was so damn hard. I wrote about that conundrum for @theflytrapmedia.bsky.social. If you want an indie pub to survive, then please pay for it.

Trump officials haven’t decided on post-inauguration Chicago raids, Homan says www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/...

Trump has said he'll overturn a law that helps communities better weather the effects of climate change. If he does, he’ll be reversing an initiative that has disproportionately benefited districts and states that voted for him. New, from @fastlerner.bsky.social @propublica.org

New: Trump is considering an executive order to stall the TikTok ban - a cinematic save of an app where he believes he's widely adored. Ok, but it's a pretty funny thought experiment to imagine PornHub if it -did- start running essays by the "modern-day equivalent of Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley Jr.”

i think a lot of folks recognize AI occasionally makes mistakes and are willing to give a little leeway to an emerging tech, but three lies in three tries is quite a batting average for a mass consumer product from one of the richest companies in world history

Once again asking what problem this technology has solved or is expected to solve to force us to endure this. www.fastcompany.com/91253026/air...

“Crazy” Steve Szegho wanted to throw free concerts as a college student in the early 70s. He built up a production crew that set the foundation for Chicago’s behind-the-scenes infrastructure.

10 years ago a Furry convention in suburbs came under chlorine gas attack. @ckubzansky.bsky.social got FBI records on investigation, which included a dude saying he’d “been involved with Furries for the past 11-12 years and you make enemies during that time” www.chicagotribune.com/2025/01/14/t...

When we see narratives that blame the most vulnerable people for problems caused by the most powerful, I think it’s important to remember that this viral spread of misinfo is a more pervasive version of what the powerful have always done to defend themselves, with tech they steered in this direction

Still wild to me that so many "savvy" folks on left and right have bought into the idea that online misinformation is overblown and doesn't really matter. From lies about migrants to transgender people to crime to election denial to climate denial, it's literally driving our country's politics.

There are now five active wildfires burning in Los Angeles County, according to Cal Fire. At least five people have died. High wind speeds, which fueled the blazes, decreased overnight, but another wind surge is forecast for late Thursday into Friday, with gusts up to 60 mph. wapo.st/4j9jVJt

Probably asking too much to hope one of these media newsletter dudes does an update about the actual humans at WaPo who got laid off, like the PR team. Discuss the incredible work they did and what they brought to the Post and explain the stakes of who and what is being lost with these cuts.

This is the stuff I'm a doomer about. Real journalism takes time - even a quick, original 700-word story requires a lot of legwork, relationships, etc. It can never compete with instant slop, or accounts that just plagiarize news for free with more sensationalistic (and wrong) framing.

Streaming in 2010: You can watch an entire catalog of amazing movies and TV shows for a reasonable monthly fee Streaming in 2025: our library is Batman movies and 28 seasons of a Tim Allen sitcom, it costs $159/month. We just destroyed the last piece of evidence that Mister Rogers ever existed

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration made a big deal about pushing for a city-owned grocery store and said they’d pursue state money for the program. But records dug up by @taliasoglin.bsky.social show they didn’t even apply. www.chicagotribune.com/2025/01/06/j...

Someone needs to get one of these and then watch Silence of the Lambs

Love watching the Golden Globes with mom: every name is a combo of two separate actors, she’s off on every woman’s age by 15 years because everyone has so much work done now, and she wishes men would shave their beards so she can recognize them. She hasn’t seen any of the films.
