Which "pro-Putin successor to the old DDR communist party" would that be? The Wagenknecht party didn't even reach the 5% threshold.

I thought the "biggest ego" reference was about Lindner and his thoroughly unlikeable gang, but it could apply to Wagenknecht as well

Sounds familiar - like when I'm standing on an (otherwise fairly empty) train platform and some other person either a. stands to wait right in front of me or b. paces to and fro in my personal space. Drives me nuts

Is the "invading your personal space even though the entire room is empty" the issue here? That's something that drives me slightly crazy in π©πͺ

He had a lot of, ahem, drive in that respect, apparently, so you wouldn't have met with much resistance!

I used the Radio Garden app a lot to listen to national/local BBC radio stations from here in π©πͺ, but they don't seem to be available abroad anymore. A real shame.

We got good advice off BOC. One recommendation was for me to also get a "Tiefeinsteiger" model because a) the bike is fairly heavy and b) if you've got rear panniers, it's pretty difficult to get your leg over the pannier and the seat without losing your balance.

My wife's even has a Garmin rear radar telling you when someone is approaching from behind - bonkers

We shopped at BOC Frankfurt. Ebikes are a whole new world of tech: engine/battery size, Ketten- or Nabenschaltung, type of chain (ours have a carbon belt drive!), apps, GPS/e-lock etc.

We're looking/buying at the moment, and the bikes we were shown all had removable batteries (Cannondale, Cube) with separate chargers. (We're buying a Cannondale Mavaro Neo each, btw).

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm always on the lookout for further ed/CPD opportunities. I work with just one FL (π©πͺ) and translate only into π¬π§ (which is enough of a challenge as it is) so any other FL combination would totally overwhelm me, tbh!

Thanks - the combination π¬π§ native speaker and π©πͺ as the first (only?) foreign language isn't available, is that right?

A combination of black pudding and copious amounts of wine (it is all for charity, after all!) might have a rather "cleansing" effect, if you get my drift!

Some Germans clearly haven't been paying attention in civics classes. The Basic Law states that "a German is a person who possesses German citizenship". That's it, that's all we need to know. None of this "biodeutsch" vs "Passdeutsche" bullshit.

No, the "K" word has nothing to do with Canadians as such, I'm afraid ...

Split ticketing and following an email itinerary might be cheaper but it certainly sounds like hard work.

Maybe I'm just lazy but I find that booking through my normal Avanti app (even for places outside their routes) works just fine for me.

Last point: As a π¬π§, I personally did not have to jump through any additional hoops to buy our place but I don't know if those rules have changed since or are different for Canada, say. Definitely worth checking.

If the property owner is selling lots of flats, perhaps interested buyers could club together to get more clout and negotiate a better deal with banks.
comment in response to
post
Perhaps the City of Berlin/state banks/the KfW offers grants/support for people buying their own place. This is jumping the gun a bit, but if you promise to renovate the flat sustainably, you might qualify for cheaper loans.

Good luck with this, I'm sure it's all quite exciting for you! Lynn has already covered a lot of important points, but I would add that mortgages in π©πͺ are nearly all fixed rate loans rather than variable trackers that vary in line with the ECB rate.

... which, being as it's breaking news, cannot yet be established. That phrase also covers all bases as well (it may well have been a tragic accident).
So my theory is that it's a very useful turn of phrase for a headline, even if it is utterly maddening to see it used.

My unproven theory is that "10 killed as (something awful happens)" is simply "good journalistic practice".
β‘οΈ Start with the eye-catching death toll followed by its cause
β‘οΈ Writing "... as car ploughs into crowd" allows you to avoid attributing intent on the part of the driver ...

On a side note, I like his use of "we" when it's about saving money and "our child", but "she" and "her" when it's about negotiating a higher salary etc. Internalising the benefits but externalising the donkey work. Surely they should consider their finances collectively.

In these circumstances, even a true believer may well respond to this survey by saying they have less faith in democracy, but for different reasons than one might expect. That might skew the survey results.

On a related note, it's possible to be a diehard believer in democracy and yet dismayed at how sluggish and unfit for purpose it seems to be in responding to social media-driven populism.

What strikes me about The Ark is the amazing production, lush inventiveness and sheer variety of sounds for a 1968 recording. The White Album, say, sounds totally clunky/tinny and cheap by comparison.

Great to see Chad and Jeremy get a bit of attention. Their nerdy look and posh names didn't really help with the marketing (though the Zombies looked just the same back then, of course).
