It is essential in a democracy for the public to have access to news about their government from an independent, free press.

Do platform workers reject social protection, embracing self-reliance and meritocracy? Our research says no. Platform workers demand better access to social benefits, pushing for both social consumption and investment. With @mbusemeyer.bsky.social journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/... 🧵Thread ⬇️

I am looking for a postdoc in my new project on "The domestic politics of EU action against democratic backsliding". Please, check also the project website for the call for applications (as well as the calls for two more postdoc positions in Bremen and Wroclaw): sites.google.com/view/deudem

New edited volume from the International Labour Organization (ILO) on temporary labour migration programmes, including our chapter "Business mobility as a privileged form of temporary labour migration" and many more contributions, now open-access. ow.ly/1r8j50V5VJP

We are hiring TWO political theorists as well as a PPE position which is open to theorists (focus on history of economic thought) - please apply and circulate! www.kcl.ac.uk/jobs/108445-...

Remember Maximilian Krah, the lead candidate of the AfD 2024 European election who screwed up their campaign by scandals surrounding Chinese spies and trivialising the SS? Well, he ran again, this time for the Bundestag, and won in a constiuency in Saxony with 44.2%:

Great picture

Our review article with Katharina Meissner on the different ways in which national parliaments and the European Parliament interact in EU policy-making now has an official place in the first issue of JLS in 2025 We find increasing institutionalisation of cooperative relations doi.org/10.1080/1357...

This is really good by @martinsandbu.ft.com: If Europe’s tech regulations are necessary conditions for alternative products and technologies to emerge, Big Tech’s visceral opposition is a sign that Europe is on the right track. It should plough on rather than be deflected www.ft.com/content/86ec...

Great chart for seeing that the key change in 🇩🇪 politics is the fragmentation of the traditional SPD & CDU coalitions of voters into multiple parties

As promised, here are the slides I shared with students to convince them to NOT use chatGPT and other artificial stupidity. TL;DR? AI is evil, unsustainable and stupid, and I'd much rather they use their own brains, make their own mistakes, and actually learn something. 🪄

Just came back from voting. In my constituency, there is the choice between Scholz and Baerbock, but tellingly the AfD is second on the ballot, their position from last time. What should EU watchers look for as results come in tonight?

Italy's far-right PM Giorgia Meloni has been quiet the past 2 weeks, deciding which side to take. She's in a difficult position having to reconcile her supposed support for 🇺🇦 with her strong embrace of Trump. With this speech at CPAC, she's made a choice.

Germany 🇩🇪 goes to the polls 🗳️ today. Perhaps the single most important thing for Europe to watch tonight: will AfD & Linke pick up 1/3 of the seats, enabling them to block constitutional reform. Dreams of bold steps in EU integration needed to respond to 🇺🇸 🇺🇦 🇷🇺, esp. on defense, may get shattered.

Europe could need 300,000 more troops and an annual defence spending hike of at least €250 billion in the short term to deter Russian aggression, write Alexandr Burilkov and @guntramwolff.bsky.social in our joint analysis with @kiel.institute. #EconSky

This is true. So what can Europe do? In the short term, it can improve Ukraine's "outside option" - ie what Ukraine gets if it says "no" to whatever Trump and Putin cook up. /

I remember those times! Fascinating in-depth analysis of the heydays of British EU membership by @jamesrdennison.bsky.social

Exceptionally tonedeaf comments of the likely new Chancellor: - Eurocrisis was first of all a governance crisis - German parochialism on full display - Timing could not be worse and seems ignorant of international context

❗Call for papers ❗ Gijs Jan Brandsma and myself are hosting the 'EU meets politics' panel at the upcoming Politicologenetmaal (Annual Political Science Workshops of the Low Countries) on 12-13 June at @unigroningen.bsky.social. Submit your papers before midnight 31 March. Already looking forward!

Regarding the search for a pile of money to help pay for Defence, EU competitiveness etc.. I truly wonder if and when this elephant in the room - mentioned by Giegold - will be acknowledged in Brussels: "We spend relatively too much on agriculture in comparison to future industries."

Polish FM Sikorski just said in Munich that Macron has invited European leaders to Paris tomorrow to discuss the evolving security situation and Ukraine talks. Wonder who will be at this table and can't help but think an emergency European Council should also happen next week.

Zelensky: Trump respects strength. If not Brussels then it's Moscow. Note: applause here is scattered. The room is not yet ready to take the full measure of what is happening. At the end, the room rises as one man.

What is social media's place in democracy? Tragically timely, given that the owner of a key social media platform is now part of the US government. Still, happy to see the article finally published (OA). www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

The #EuroStack Report is out! It is about building a European alternative, to empower citizens, workers, industries to reclaim control of their digital future. Read the report! www.euro-stack.info @bertelsmannst.bsky.social @ucl-iipp.bsky.social @ceps.eu @stiftungmercator.bsky.social

Truly great stuff from @martinsandbu.ft.com: ‘Two instincts should be avoided: a desire to avoid an economic war with the US as much as possible; and a desire to have what the US has, attempting to copy the particulars of its digital success rather than build what is best for Europe’

Microsoft Research: GenAI can inhibit critical engagement with work and can potentially lead to long-term overreliance on the tool and diminished skill for independent problem-solving. Microsoft: *sells GenAI aggressively into the Education 365 packages*

Crucial point. Normalisation and "bothsiding" of manifest and repeated unconstitutional/illegal actions by media at a time of rule of law backsliding (arguably breakdown in this case considering speed and scope) only help those seeking democracy's demise

79 States Parties respond to U.S. sanctions on the International Criminal Court:

So who did the European Commission invite to today's Omnibus consultation? #CSDDD #CSRD #Taxonomy @somoamsterdam.bsky.social had a look at the 30 companies on the guest list. Here's what we found: 🧵 @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu @vdombrovskis.bsky.social

The Netherlands is no longer Germany's 17th federal state in economic terms. New Commission research shows that once strong NL-DE correlations in macro variables (GDP, investment) have become insignificant. A couple of observations on the stunning divergence between the frugal bulwarks. 1/

Haven't seen this before, but very astute: AI act as "a software safety law under the guise of ‘AI’ jargon"

For decades the EU has meekly accepted the extraterritorial application of US law, indeed accepted interference and the US dictating (literally) EU legislation. Europe does not owe the US any explanation on its own laws and how they apply to any company operating within EU jurisdiction. Full stop.

One day we'll look back: "There is no precedent for a government official to have Mr. Musk’s scale of conflicts of interest" “There is not one single entity holding Musk accountable. It’s a harbinger of the destruction of our basic institutions” says Douglas Brinkley www.nytimes.com/2025/02/03/u...

As J-M Le Pen always said: voters prefer the original to the copy. Acting tough on immigration is not just not working for Europe's centre right parties, it's pushing them out the door www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...
