Listen in to hear how Aston academics use linguistics skills to help solve crime

#EnglishCreates How researchers at Aston (www.aston.ac.uk/bss/social-s...) help with criminal investigations:

'The artificial intelligence boom means the Environment Agency has no idea how much water England will be short of in future decades, as datacentres do not have to report how much they are using to cool their servers.' Maybe the policy of 'turbocharging' AI everywhere & all the time needs thought?

We're really sorry to hear of the death of our dear colleague Professor Simon James. From 2016-19, Simon was PI on the Arts Council England and Durham University collaboration, the Durham Commission on Creativity which investigated the benefits of creativity for young people.

Championing Scots, influencing public policy, and working with communities and creatives

'A survey of academic integrity violations found almost 7,000 proven cases of cheating using AI tools in 2023-24, equivalent to 5.1 for every 1,000 students. That was up from 1.6 cases per 1,000 in 2022-23.' 1/2

At a symposium, where I can report, what will surprise nobody, that Janice Radway is a jaw-dropping badass.

Today is the last day at the NEH for me and many of my amazingly dedicated colleagues. We did our best to represent & serve the American people. To champion humanities research, teaching, public engagement, cultural heritage, infrastructure, and innovation.

This should be **verbatim** the first and primary thing every HS guidance counselor and collegiate advisor should say to every student they work with.

Re: college majors: Just about everyone I worked with in law firms who were not English (me) or philosophy majors wish they had been. Those disciplines give you the arsenal of skills, soft and hard, you need for the job. Just sayin’

As this 3-part post is picking up quite a lot of commentary, a concrete suggestion. If you think UK universities need & deserve investment for teaching & research, write to your MP (and to the PM) to say so & to say why. If you need evidence of regional or other impact, just search this database:

Devastating for international students and US universities. In a rational universe, this would also provide a lifeline for many struggling UK universities.

If your business model doesn’t work without breaking the law, then you’re not in business. You’re in organized crime.

A very busy week for advocacy: @britishacademy.bsky.social & @ucflangs.bsky.social joint Strategic Committee on Langs in HE today; #SchoolofAdvancedStudy Humanities Summit on Thurs; and #UCFL Exec Committee meeting Friday. Never more important for us to undertake this work and never so urgent 🚨

“If A.I. is carelessly incorporated all the way down to pre-K, it would be a horrible mistake. It could inhibit children’s critical thinking and literacy skills,” Jessica Grose writes.

How about we start celebrating higher education as a nation? How about we start shouting, loudly, of the social good of higher education? How about we talk of the nurses, the doctors, the teachers, the social workers, educated at universities? How about we celebrate the artists, the writers, 1/

MPs who come out with this stuff should have the courage to say specifically which universities they mean; and then those universities should have the courage to sue them.

"On the doorstep people don’t make a distinction between graduate visas & small boats" This is: a) objectively wrong (plenty of polling evidence) b) suggests utter contempt for electorate's thought processes c) is a dreadful way to make policy Otherwise fine www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

I’m sorry but if your students use AI to write papers and you use AI to grade them zero school is happening. You are running together on a hamster wheel

'when AI generates summaries, students bypass the cognitive engagement required to actively interpret academic work. It is precisely this engagement – the effort to comprehend, synthesise and relate ideas – that catalyses learning.' 1/3
