Excellent reporting from @mongabay.bsky.social on the rapid rise of unregulated illegal lead mining that is devastating the environment, land, and water of Myanmar's southernmost Tanintharyi region. Farms downstream already seeing die out of crop trees as poisoned water flows from the sites.

To put this into perspective, this project alone is roughly half the size of Manhattan.

Quite chuffed at some of my newest books. I read nearly all nonfiction, and my interests are infinite, but you can usually count on some plant & history titles to be included. This week some literature, drugs and unorthodox building projects thrown into the mix as well. πŸ’™πŸ“šπŸ‘€

50 years ago today the Khmer Rouge rolled into Phnom Penh and began evacuating the city's 2 million people to the countryside, marking the start of some of the most horrific years in the 20th century. But the world would not know for some time. Cambodia went dark. Cannot recommend this book enough.

Nearly 4 months to the day and these seedlings are now all mostly mature plants and just coming into bloom. πŸŒ±πŸ”ΈοΈπŸŒ΄πŸ”ΈοΈπŸͺ΄πŸ”ΈοΈπŸŒΏπŸ”ΈοΈπŸŒ΅

Having your garden at your weekend house means sometimes missing out on short lived rare orchid blooms if they peak mid-week. 😭 1) Monday PM, not yet formed 2) Friday PM, bloomed out and dried up 3) Entire plant (now), showing tiny bloom 4) Ref photo from web Bulbophyllum vaginatum 🌱 β˜† 🌴 β˜† πŸͺ΄ β˜† 🌿

An interesting variation of a common tree here in Thailand that I pass on my morning walks with the dogs. Usually solid bright lemon yellow, this golden shower tree is mostly white. Having received damage to our shophouse from this quake, even though the epicenter was over 1000km (650 miles) away in another country, this sounds about right.

We had nearly arrived at our house in Khao Tao when the earthquake hit last Friday. Neighbors from Bangkok had reported no damage and we assumed our place there was OK. But when we returned yesterday morning we found a ceiling beam on the 3rd (top) floor of our shophouse was cracked. Ugh. 😞
