Excellent reporting from @mongabay.bsky.social on the rapid rise of unregulated illegal lead mining that is devastating the environment, land, and water of Myanmar's southernmost Tanintharyi region. Farms downstream already seeing die out of crop trees as poisoned water flows from the sites.

50 years ago today the Khmer Rouge rolled into Phnom Penh and began evacuating the city's 2 million people to the countryside, marking the start of some of the most horrific years in the 20th century. But the world would not know for some time. Cambodia went dark. Cannot recommend this book enough.

Having received damage to our shophouse from this quake, even though the epicenter was over 1000km (650 miles) away in another country, this sounds about right.

We had nearly arrived at our house in Khao Tao when the earthquake hit last Friday. Neighbors from Bangkok had reported no damage and we assumed our place there was OK. But when we returned yesterday morning we found a ceiling beam on the 3rd (top) floor of our shophouse was cracked. Ugh. 😞
