Ambassador Morse Tan referred to impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol as the "Donald Trump of Asia" at CPAC. He voiced opposition to Yoon's impeachment, justifying his declaration of martial law as a measure to address rampant election fraud in South Korea.

Article includes snippets of interviews with college students who attended anti-impeachment protests on campuses in Seoul. They don’t identify themselves as “far-right” while at the same time think martial law was justified in the name of uncovering election fraud www.joongang.co.kr/article/2531...

Good piece by @williamgallo.bsky.social explaining how the Trump agenda and freezes at NED is devastating the North Korea-related NGO community and why, unfortunately, these NGOs are unlikely to find help from Seoul in picking up the slack www-voanews-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/www.voan...

South Korea's Constitutional Court will hear the final arguments in Yoon's impeachment trial next Tuesday. It took 11 days after the final hearing for the court to rule on the impeachment of former president Park Geun-hye in 2017.

New conspiracy on the Korean far right is that Yoon will be assassinated (like Lincoln 🙄 their words, not mine). www.joongang.co.kr/article/2531...

Park Sun-won doubles down on his argument that Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. A couple weeks ago it was revealed that he had recommended Trump and suggests that the Democratic Party jointly nominate Trump if Lee Jae-myung becomes president. www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/nation/2...

Chosun Ilbo has compiled what its reporters see as the big 5 questions when it comes to Yoon’s impeachment. Would seem to suggest impeachment is very likely. Thread covers the 5 points. 1/ www.chosun.com/national/cou...

Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung may be going too far to court conservatives in upcoming election. Says the DP is “not progressive” but a “center-right” party. Honestly he isn’t wrong in a lot of respects but still a weird thing to say. www.hani.co.kr//arti/politi...

A lot of attention this weekend to anti-impeachment protests in Gwangju, the traditional stronghold of the Democratic Party. Police estimated 30,000 people showed up to the anti-impeachment protest, while only 10,000 were on hand for the pro-impeachment protest. 1/ www.chosun.com/national/reg...

Talk of Yoon resigning has surfaced after one anti-Yoon conservative mentioned the idea late last week. Yoon’s lawyers say it’s baseless speculation but anonymous conservative lawmakers don’t think it’s a bad idea. www.joongang.co.kr/article/2531...

Short 🧵 on South Korean perceptions of US, China, and Japan. Perceptions of China have sharply declined: 16.1% had a negative perception in 2015 compared to 71.5% today. Positive perceptions of Japan increased from 9.9% in 2020 to 31.4% today. 1/

Found this recap of gender politics in Korea helpful for thinking back to how we got where we are with young men in Korea supporting Yoon and storming courthouses. thediplomat.com/2025/02/angr...

Sometimes I feel its hard to see the forest for the trees when it comes to Yoon's impeachment. It seems the hearings have become lost in details, but the simple fact remains that declaring martial law as Yoon did was unconstitutional. Good points here. english.hani.co.kr/arti/english...

Today in Yoon not doing himself any favors: claims that during the martial law it wasn't the citizens potentially becoming victims of martial law violence, but rather, "the military became targets of citizen's violence" m.khan.co.kr/article/2025...

According to Yoon, because the opposition didn’t clap at all for him during his inauguration speech he couldn’t engage in a conversation with them. He really said that. www.hani.co.kr//arti/societ...

Confession of the teacher who killed a first grader: "It didn't matter which child, I just wanted to die together." "I told the last child leaving after school daycare that I would give her a book and told her to follow me to the A/V room and then I killed her." www.chosun.com/national/reg...

Yoon made the mistake of declaring martial law and announcing he was shuttering the National Assembly setting off alarm bells and allowing for a massive coordinated response. Trump is just doing it and I wonder how many Americans won't realize democracy is gone until its too late.

Here's the acting head of FEMA just unliterally deciding that Article I is fake earlier today. The Constitution is not in effect.

I hear “Gulf of America” has gone live on Google maps in the US. Here in Korea we get both.

PPP leader Kweon Seong-dong gives a speech arguing the cause of the current political crisis is Lee Jae-myung and the DP. Also states that the PPP has made some achievements during Yoon's presidency. Everyone looks like their are in presidential election mode. 1/ www.chosun.com/politics/pol...

Shocking news in Korea. Elementary school teacher in Daejeon stabs her student to death and then cuts herself in perhaps an attempt at suicide but does not die. Confesses to her crime before surgery. Teacher reportedly had a history of struggling with depression www.chosun.com/national/reg...

Former President Moon Jae-in gave his first interview since leaving office and expressed regret for helping give rise to Yoon Suk Yeol by choosing him as Prosecutor General in 2019. Also thought that at first the martial law declaration was fake news. english.hani.co.kr/arti/english...

Trump says tariffs on steel and aluminum are coming this week and repeated his expectation that reciprocal tariffs will also be levied in the coming week. This will surely make Korean exporters nervous. www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/world/20...
