Trying to find the right way to pay tribute to Gene Hackman . . . and inspire my students through the challenging days ahead. “Remember what got you here. Focus on the fundamentals that we’ve gone over time and time again, and – most important – don’t get caught up thinking about winning or losing.”

How many times a week do we need to use the word unconscionable for government actions. Horrifying.

Where DHS provided crucial data – across countries & over time – the loss of these health indicators will: - make invisible the suffering of marginalized populations, - hobble efforts to address health inequities & - undermine monitoring essential for accountability. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/26/h...

Democracy dies in deference

This death belongs to the anti-vaxxer-in-chief #RFKJr and his enablers, #BillCassidy #SusanCollins #JoniErnst and all those who knew better and voted “yes.” You all have blood on your hands. apnews.com/article/meas...

I prefer my government to not accidentally cancel Ebola prevention. Just me though.

This is a really upsetting case of political interference with data collection. “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will no longer process transgender identity data in order to comply with President Trump’s executive order, agency representative Melissa Dibble told STAT on Tuesday.”

This is exactly the fear-mongering the administration wants to fuel. As an ID physician, I can confirm that immigrants undergo comprehensive exams—including TB testing (with chest X-rays for adults), screening for diseases like syphilis, and review of immunization records—to protect public health

Accidents down 55% and injuries down 51% since nyc congestion pricing (!!!) www.nydailynews.com/2025/02/22/c...

In their crusade against "transgender insanity," the Trump administration is now going so far as to rewrite history. Paid a visit to Stonewall last week and wrote about it for @usatoday.com. www.usatoday.com/story/opinio...

Nobody is rushing in to fill the funding gap left by the US “It’s important for us in the global south to imagine an international coordination of emergency preparedness and response without the United States.” @deisyventura.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/h...

I think it would make a big difference in our health if we banned Pharma ads from America like the rest of the world does.

NEW: Public health teams are being gutted, imperiling efforts to safeguard organ donation and prevent maternal and infant death. Many workers expressed fear at what would happen to the work they left behind.

The US has not shared flu data with the WHO since January, sparking concerns ahead of key vaccine strain selection. Experts warn this could impact global flu vaccine effectiveness for the Northern Hemisphere. 🦠 🛟

Tomorrow at CUGH2025.

📅Day 4 of #PandemicAccord talks began w/ a scheduling update: Thurs will focus on prevention & surveillance (Art 4) 🌧️The mood was deflated w/ stakeholders raising concerns that the current pace would miss the May deadline 📄New text showed some gains but still much to do. 🧵

#INB13 pandemic agreement negotiations continued today. Here’s our recap 🧵 of Day 3️⃣👇

Beginning the Consortium of Universities for Global Health Conference, please join our Pre-Conference Session on: “Political Advocacy for Global Health” Thursday, 1-4 This interactive session examines political advocacy to advance public health in challenging times. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

At CUGH 2025, the Advocacy & Communications Committee presents: “Global Health in a Divided World: Policy Debates in Health Journals” Friday, 3:15-4:45 Grand Ballroom D This late-breaking panel brings together journal editors to discuss how to engage with ongoing global health policy debates.

“NPR heard from several FDA staff… who worked on reviews for devices that do things like detect cancer and help people with diabetes. They say they have kept devices that don't work or are dangerous off the market and fear that downsizing their ranks could be dangerous to consumers.”

WHO Member States (MS) resumed pandemic agreement negotiations today with #INB13 (Feb. 17-21). This week, negotiators can set the stage for finalizing a historic agreement and demonstrate the solidarity essential to keep us all safer. 🧵 Our recap of Day 1️⃣👇

Yeah, that's exactly what this anti DEI purge is all about. Censoring minorities and expelling trans people out of public life.

As @who.int Members continue to negotiate a pandemic agreement this week, @helenclarknz.bsky.social, @panaction.bsky.social, Spark Street Advisors & The Panel for a Global Public Health Convention are clear: "We are counting on you to pull together and get the agreement done." bit.ly/4gJVgsN

A plea for patient pessimism. Best analysis of the ‘situation’ befalling global health I’ve read this year. By @vyoma.bsky.social

Anti-abortion states are stepping up efforts to criminalize abortion -- and it could affect people's access to quality healthcare. @michelebgoodwin.bsky.social says those states' "hostile, toxic environment" is a "threat" to health and doctors' ability to provide care. #Velshi

On hold at the CDC: An analysis suggesting that flu cases *may* be at a record high. That could mean a surge of deaths comes next. The CDC is delaying analyses to inform the situation & has cut off usual communication w/hospital networks & WHO. My latest: kffhealthnews.org/news/article...

Thank you to PLOS Global Health for asking me to write for their brilliant (unpaywalled!) journal on why need to foster hope in this moment. ✍️ ➡️ speakingofmedicine.plos.org/2025/02/13/w...

So many of our public health students will have their careers derailed . . . before they even begin.

"Since Donald Trump took office on 20 January, two federal agencies responsible for monitoring and responding to the epidemic have withheld bird flu reports and canceled congressional briefings and meetings with state health officials, the sources said."

Oh my god. They removed "transgender" from the page about Trans woman Sylvia Rivera's page at the National Park service. "Sylvia Rivera began fighting for gay and _____ rights" WOW.

Shutting down crucial global health programs, from fighting AIDS and Ebola to community-led monitoring of health systems is not only terrible policy but it violates the law. Narrow waivers that, for example, allow HIV treatment but not HIV prevention, solve neither.

Trans people threw the first brick at Stonewall. Now, the Trump administration is trying to write us out of that history. We will not let them. (Current page on the left, 2/1/25 version on the right)
