Why should you come see my exhibit at the Des Moines Art Center next month through November? So you can use your imagination that you’re touching the quilts when you touch one of these touch samples. I’m making “touch samples”, one set for the exhibit, one for the guards, one for the tour docents. This way hopefully people will keep their hands to themselves with the actual show quilts. This @aurifil.bsky.social holder is handy to hold my large spools and have a resting surface on my lap.

The Des Moines Art Center’s latest exhibition is a self-titled collection of works by Firelei Báez. It’s an incredible show. We heard her in conversation with the Center’s director, which was a treat. I’ll share more pieces soon.

Deleted all my skeets about Apple Music because some issues were resolved by deleting all preferences and signing out of Apple Music. The problems that persist are a foundational Apple Music problem that no power on earth will solve.

Working on quilts has helped some. Until the iron literally burned out on the gayest of the set (not flaming, at least) and was forced to sit in the hallway until it cooled down. Because I’m a person and not a machine, I have to keep going. Fortunately the other very gay quilt doesn’t need an iron.

I’ve been really struggling on the quilt design for my jacket; sketching, mocking, nothing has felt right. Then I was reminded of Hal Fischer’s ‘Gay Semiotics’. Boom. There we go. Bonus: it will connect to a quilt in the show.

Toile 2 (and final). Made edits (longer shoulder, slightly lower bottom edge of arm hole, further reduced after initial sew, added back darts, 1.5” longer) and cut from thicker muslin. I’ll make the collar shorter and use eyes/hooks, not pins, for the real thing. Now to piece and assemble the quilt.

Good thing I kept a previous toile around. I repurposed it to test a Basic Block. I gave my measurements to someone on Etsy, after making my own following YouTube videos. I used her block initially, but need alterations.

Despite how some of the colorways were way weird, writing the name on a bit of selvedge was the best thing I could have done when I distributed cut fabric to each quilt top pile. Especially for Holly and Clover that I can’t keep straight even when labeling the scrap.
