Really rather chuffed with this... 😏😊

Great write up by my student and recent @uobrishistory.bsky.social graduate, Dr Qiqing Tan, with excellent advice re. how to prepare for a PhD viva historiansatbristol.blogs.bristol.ac.uk/archives/903. Take note, #medievalsky ECRs and @ecrpodcasters.bsky.social!

🤘🇸🇪🤘

Lovely to see this in the flesh, with innovative contributions by many amazing colleagues incl. @vincentdebiais.bsky.social and a very manuscript-heavy (surprise!) chapter on Geoffrey of Monmouth by yours truly. Downloadable ebook (OA) here: www.degruyter.com/document/doi...

Massive #medievalsky manuscript find in the SBB-PKB: a copy of Ranulf Higden's 'Petagogicum'—a work hitherto presumed lost—produced near the time of its composition and perhaps under Ranulf's personal supervision (according to the article). Congrats to all involved! www.spkmagazin.de/2025/der-moe...

At least one good piece of news today… www.tagesschau.de/eilmeldung/e...

Today is going to be a very difficult day to watch from afar. C’mon, Deutschland! #togetherfordemocracy #gemeinsamfuerdemokratie

“Wo waren die als Walter Lübcke ermordet wurde?” fragte Merz heute beim Wahlkampfabschluss vorwurfsvoll in Richtung derjenigen, die in den letzten Wochen gegen seine Mehrheitsbildung mit der AfD demonstriert haben. Sie haben natürlich auch damals für die Demokratie demonstriert:

The old hood is looking beautiful this morning at a crisp and sunny -10° 🏃❄️☀️

Perhaps the most infuriating trend of late in academic publishing is for journals—esp the big ones with their global subscriber base—to stop sending complementary print copies to authors. I was recently 'offered' to purchase a single issue post-publication at a special rate of 'just' £77 + shipping!

So infuriating to see these people sabotage the freedom of future generations. Labour, Tories, all cut from the same cloth. www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/yvette...

Bit of a wobbly start for the boys in green, but what a second half! 💪🏉☘️

Immensely proud of my brilliant PhD student Qiqing Tan, who this morning successfully passed the viva for her brilliant thesis 'Fiscal Challenges and Strategies: Irish Revenue during the Reign of Edward II' (co-supervised by Brendan Smith) @uobrishistory.bsky.social @bristolcms.bsky.social 🥳🎉🍾🥂

Yeah, a real ‘major win’ to lift PhD studentships to *checks notes* minimum wage(!) *slow clap* at the same time as slashing the overall number of studentships awarded and axing several DTP programmes… 🙃🙄

From this dark day onwards, members (and voters) of the CDU and FDP will have to take responsibility—and be held responsible—for sacrificing the country’s democratic integrity at the altar of cheap fascist populism. The Rubicon has been crossed.

Merz: Kopiert rechtsextreme Politik. Was passiert? Wild.

What more will it take for this govt to get off the fence and put proper funding behind one of the country’s most valuable and recognised global assets, rather than being complicit in this insane act of self-harming educational vandalism? www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-u...

Impromptu class quiz for my students: Chanson d’Antioche or Tenacious D?

If you’re still using X at this point, for fear of losing ‘engagement’ or whatever other excuse you have, either delete it today, or just admit you’re ok with supporting the extreme right with your time & attention

“Sach ma, wie lange wollt ihr bei dem Scheiß bleiben?!”

This is a turning point. We Europeans have the power to push X into irrelevance across our continent. Freeze or delete your accounts now. Media, it’s time to stop citing X. Dozens of universities are leading the way. Let’s limit Elon Musk’s influence in 🇪🇺. #eXit #SciXit #Democracy

Exciting to see @themedievaldrk.bsky.social's pioneering catalogue on medieval manuscripts in Bristol collections available for pre-order! Yet another excellent title on Bristol Studies in Medieval Cultures (BSMC) published with @boydellandbrewer.bsky.social! boydellandbrewer.com/978184384747...

A rather fetching new addition to the research library shelves of the @magdalenoxford.bsky.social Archives, even if I do say so myself (as I'm sure would @benpohl.bsky.social and @boydellandbrewer.bsky.social) 😉

No married or single envelopes in this bin!

That looks SO good!

Our little one got 2025 off to a good start…

Please forgive me, friends, but I simply cannot—despite my best efforts—take seriously a society unable to protect its most vulnerable that hands out peerages and honours with much pomp and circumstance whilst failing spectacularly to feed the hungry, house the homeless, cure the sick, etc.
