If we’re wanting to identify someone whose form is a major concern – particularly given the lack of alternatives – I’d be looking more in the direction of Fabian Schar

Yes, Gordon has let himself down, his team-mates, the fans, his dog, etc, etc, but I’ve also seen criticism of his form this season, which I’m not sure about. He scored in both legs against Arsenal and scored or assisted in every game of the nine-game winning run

Struggling to follow the logic of those again complaining Newcastle have lost focus ahead of the final and are thinking solely about Wembley. Pope in 2023 and Gordon yesterday were very much not thinking about Wembley, I’d suggest

Brighton are one of only two current PL sides – the other being Palace (obviously excluding Newcastle) – Alex Isak has never scored against..

Last one, because there’s a much bigger game on Sunday. From what I’ve heard/read, regular Newcastle watchers thought it was a poor game, Newcastle were poor and Liverpool weren’t tested, while regular Liverpool watchers thought it was a good game between good teams and Liverpool were outstanding

Surely nobody expected Newcastle to go to Anfield and win even with a full-strength XI, which is what Liverpool (Gakpo only fit enough for the bench aside) had. So without Botman, Joelinton and Isak and having still been well in the game for an hour, I don’t really see the need to be overly negative

Newcastle don’t win at Anfield, just like they don’t win at the Etihad (or Wembley…). But they at least paid for their bravery tonight, rather than their timidity as at City. Report: www.premierleague.com/news/4251423

Ah, red-cards-miss-the-final territory, how I haven’t missed you

No Liverpool masterplan tonight, please, Mr Howe. Let’s save that. They can have this one

Ahead of their 16th domestic final, Weds is the eighth time Newcastle have played their final opponents in the league between the semis and the final. After beating Villa at SJP prior to their first cup final, Newcastle have been away from home in each of the next seven and so far won none of them

Lost count of the number of times yesterday I and others compared Newcastle’s performance to Aberdeen’s season. Does it matter what order things happen in? Probably. But there’s definitely some revisionism in the criticism of players who were outstanding for the first 45 mins

Big game today. #Big #game

Big game tomorrow. #Big #game

Big game on Sunday. #Big #game

Only concern about the Trafford deal is if essentially sorting it this early impacts on the rest of the season. Does Dubravka now play for the duration given he, presumably unlike Pope, will still be here next year?

I didn’t like how Newcastle set up yesterday, but maybe Howe would argue that if the attitude is better, the passing and defending are tighter, City are more wasteful, it just looks like the win at Arsenal. Perhaps that game plan can work if the players turn up and get a little luck

A simple, brutal lesson for Newcastle: be relentless or get nothing. #NUFC www.nytimes.com/athletic/613...

Ultimately, if Newcastle win just one game, specifically this time next month, they can lose every other game this season 4-0 and that’ll be more than fine. Let’s get all the really bad performances/game plans out of the way now

High line with no pressure on the ball, slow defenders and a goalkeeper who doesn’t/can’t sweep. Suppose that’s one option

Just lucky really that cup finals aren’t played at the Etihad; they’re at Wembley, where Newcastle have a much, much better record

This has been so, so bad – game plan, application, everything. Man City are obviously still a good team, but they’re not this good

Newcastle will get chances today, but they need to be clinical. They’ve had opportunities against better City teams every time they’ve gone there under Howe and taken precisely none of them. The game two years ago stands out – Gordon, Wilson, Joelinton all miskicking with clear sights of goal

Liverpool fans spending weeks – understandably – taking the piss out of Arsenal fans for completely losing their minds at very little, only to do exactly the same themselves. Sad!

Appears there’s been a bit of a shift in the national media this week, and suddenly Spurs deserve some sympathy for their injury crisis. Use of the clips of Trippier arguing with Newcastle fans at Bournemouth last season as evidence to trust in Ange is a bit odd, though
