May the end of the school year bring me cool new things to do!

I’m finally working on publishing the last chapter of my dissertation. My favorite chapter… Why am I sad to let this one out there? It feels too final. Anyone else go through this publishing the final chapter of their dissertation? Oof…

Sneaking them out to the river. Today, my Plant and Animal diversity class got into some water to check out some arthropods. Good times were had by most?

Trying a new thang! A class, group project where students are arranged by their performance in the course. Not sure if this is good idea or not. We will see. Group names are: the pixies, dinosaur jr., sonic youth, the screaming trees, the meat puppets, and a tribe called quest. #itwasthe90s

Both of these guys are off to grad school in fall 2025. One is currently looking at reassembly of macroinvert communities after weather events in urban, ag and mountain streams. He just tightened up his sampling strategy in response to the crazy weather in the south. Good idea! I’m a proud momma.

Not cool.

Back at it with the next generation of aquatic scientists! I must rescue them from med school and give them something important to do (just kidding-ish).

New toy at U of O! #streamecology #hesswarrior

Trying to find new ways to communicate science is important, right? This was an attempt to use claymation to communicate about phragmites management to a pre-k crowd. It’s okay to laugh on #worldwetlandsday. youtu.be/XlEfymnulSY?...

If anyone would like to be added to the aquatic bug starter pack, just say so! go.bsky.app/F3WGCuV

Assorted macroinvertebrates for #invertfest. The isopod pic was taken by a student and is one of my faves. Pretty, pretty coloration. Can we love an isopod? Are they charismatic? Rizz havin’?

This is so cool - this study used Chinese poetry to reconstruct 1400 years of range change for the Yangtze finless porpoise, and showed that most of the range loss happened in the last century papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Instead of listing my publications, as the year draws to an end, I want to shine the spotlight on the commonplace assumption that productivity must always increase. Good research is disruptive and thinking time is central to high quality scholarship and necessary for disruptive research.

Is it possible that this is the cutest Fred on BlueSky? I think so. #moodeng #pitbull

Okay! Here’s a gar pun. I didn’t do it, but I like it. #25daysoffishmas

Reflecting on ‘24, we had some fun down here at the University of the Ozarks. Here are a couple of pics from my stream ecology course in Spring. #gamefish #notgamefish #dragonfly #river

Anyone know what this aphid-like little critter is? It was found in November in an urban creek in Arkansas.

We put “a bow” in our lab work for the holidays this afternoon. It was nice to bug out one last time in 2024. Here are some odonates! #dragonfly #damselfly

Our little aquatic bug pack is growing! Let’s keep on with it! Like, repost and let me know if you want to be added! go.bsky.app/F3WGCuV

Lets put this back in the feed and see if there is anyone else who who'd like to be added. We are getting your future grad students ready, and plan on writing a book one day…maybe. go.bsky.app/RnHK313

Hi Bluesky, I am happy and optimistic to be here! Anyone know a freshwater fisheries biologist into teaching who might want to come join me in the beautiful Ozark streams of SW Missouri? Please share/repost.

“The ripple of the riffle...” Heres a short, NPR-esque video that the communication department at the University of the Ozarks threw together to comm some sci about macroinvert diversity and stream quality. youtu.be/WDy1NqKR5os

Here’s a question: to what degree does *gentrification* impact urban shifts in voting behavior, both among the gentrifiers (more conservative?) and gentrified (choosing the couch? Relative deprivation?) Anyone have the methodological chops for this?

Officially making our @bsky.app arrival!
